Talking The white truck of joy arrived from the CMP today!

It's been almost two months but my wait is finally over. My first M1 Garrand is in my hot little hands. Shes packed in cosmoline but looks great otherwise. SA service grade in the 5.8 Million range. Muzzle reading 1+, throat reading 2+.

Just need to clean her up and rub her with oil! Then it's off the range.

I'll post 'after' pics when I've got her all cleaned up.

I did, but they are on the slow boat. Rounds should arrive next Wednesday. I saw this email yesterday with the tracking number and I was like Uh, Cough cough I'm taking a sick day tomorrow.

I can't wait to find a few hours to strip her down and start cleaning.

That sounds like a repeat of my week two weeks ago when mine came. Ammo came a few days later and I needed a few hours to just get to know the gun. Have never owned a clip fed weapon, so the whole en bloc thing is a bit of a learning curve, but I got it quickly. Haven't taken it down for cleaning yet but mine is a Service Special so no cosmoline but I still need to break it down for grease.

I spent two hours getting the goop off it tonight. Just a first rough pass. I didn't bust out the q-tips yet. So there is still work to be done. But the wood looks great. It took a while to get her back together the first time, but after that it's a piece of cake. I'm enjoying getting to know her. Is it wrong to want to just sit on the couch and stroke your wood?

Looking at the pics I suspect the rifle is virtually unfired, there is very little wear on the bolt rails at all, and since the breech is not parkerized i suspect the rifle has not been refinished in the past. Nice score, enjoy shooting it,, I love mine.

Yea after cleaning her it looks like she was test fired and packed away. It was worth the wait to get a brand new (almost) 60 year old rifle.

It's a slow process. I spent 30 minutes with the hair dryer on the front hand guard. Sorry about the bad lighting, but the red in the wood is coming out nicely.

Stock is almost as bad as the one I got last year. I think it's more of a preservation wax than cosmo. You'll find it keeps getting wet every time the temperature warms up and it leaks back out. I let mine sit out in the 90 degree heat several days going out to wipe it every 30 minutes and it was still coming out.

Also, similar to mine, Only the main part of the stock is super caked. I was wondering if they had a crate of just stocks come in that were all wax soaked and they placed these stocks on other uppers.

Mineral spirits will help a lot. Strip the rifle then work on mostly bare wood. TSP soap and water with scrub brush. Tru Oil when dry.

Appreciate the thrill. Was issued a Garand in ROTC drill team long ago. Now proud owner of a CMP special. The first takedown and lube was goooooood!

CMP uses a sodium hydroxide soak for cleaning metal. Not for use on wood.

The wife was frowning on that. I think she was afraid of some 50 year old funk getting into her oven and making all the food taste like old gun. So I went the route of wrapping the stock in paper towels and a black trash bag and left it in the car to sweat today.

I like the mineral spirits idea. I hadn't thought of TSP. That's not gonna be too harsh for this is it? I picked up some raw linseed oil from garand gear dot com to do the finishing work. Is the Tru Oil similar or is it boiled or refined?

Thanks for any guidance, it's been a few years sense I took wood shop, and I don't want to muck up a 50 year old stock.

Question Does the cosmo ever end?

So I put it in the oven for about an hour @ 170 and wiped it down ever 5 minutes or so. That works really well. But when does it end? How much cosmo can one rifle hold?

It's amazing how much cosmo oozes out of those things. If you quit too early, you'll get to keep wiping it down when you take it shooting. After the barrel heats up from a couple of clips worth of ammo, the hand guards will be sweating like crazy. Make sure a take a couple of rags or towels with you.

I got mine a couple weeks ago but my experience is a little different. It is a 1955 with SN# 58mill. It looks incredibly good for a service grade rifle. It has a brand new stock with CMP cartouch on side and no cosmoline! IMO this thing looks brand new although it probably is not.Throat is 2 and muzzle is 1. Everything on rifle is SA except for trigger group that is HR. I put fifty greek m2 balls through it last Saturday and at 100 yds it is grouping in the 10 ring. I know how you feel.....This is my new favorite rifle!!! Congrats

I had thought about picking up one with a new stock but I decided to roll the dice and see what happens. Even though its been a lot if work to clean up I still love it. With the original wood on it I felt like I found a classic sports car with only one mile on it. However I still have not shot it and I suspect I would have if it came with a new stock. So congratulations on your brand new 60 year old rifle.

Read stories of D-Day Invasion time frame where the quartermasters set up 55 gal. drums of boiling hot water on the beach head. Un-crating new Garands fresh from the states and dumping the WHOLE rifle into the boil. Ten minutes later, a virgin, spotlessly clean M-1 Garand was ready to be lubed up and it was off the nearby firing line for a quick sight-in.
