Default The "PAP M59" Yugo SKS

This is the first SKS that Yugoslavia came out with that started in 1961. This Yugo of mine was made in 1966. The serial numbers on these are on the receiver and the stock. As other SKS rifles will show serial numbers on various parts. The M59 shows the part number instead. Also you will notice that the bayonet is a dark grey. That is another way to identify the M59. No other SKS bayonets are like that.

How were you able to determine the year of manufacture on an M59?

Good question. There is a listing compiled from factory records by the well-known firearms and historian, Branko Bogdanovic. It can be found on page 29 in the book titled, The SKS Carbine (CKC45g) by Steve Kehaya and Joe Poyer.

Did Branko's listing match up with the trend that was starting to show over on Withergyld's chart on SKS Boards? His chart is based on the years stamped in the log books that came with the M59/66 rifles, but there were never any log books included with the M59 rifles. If the trend stayed the same then it would imply that M59s didn't really start full production until 1964 with the "A" serial numbers, then "B" in 1965 and "C" in 1966.

Withergyld's is from 2005. My info from the book that I had mentioned and is from 2008. In 1961 there were 100 produced and in 1962 &63 there was no production. I 1964 with no "letter production was 1-10,00..."A"-10,000-20,000 "B"-20,000-30,000 "C"-30,000-34,300. 1965,1966,1967 were "C". From 34,000 to 52,079 produced.

Now darn it!

First I look at your Romanian SKS post, now this one. Which means I have to go dig up the two Yugo's that I have and find out what year they were made.

These two I know a little more about, well... at least that they are unissued - still in the cosmoline. They are the model with the grenade launcher, disabled with a sleeve tack welded in place. 59/66 right?

I buy these things, pack them away, then forget about them for years and years sometimes. Heck - I found some ammo the other day that I didn't remember I had, then the light bulb went off.... "If I have this ammo... I must have a gun that shoots it right?" Sure enough... CZ52 was found after being forgotten for maybe 6 or 8 years...

Thanks for the compliments on the above rifle. Here is a pic of that same rifle before I worked it. Military rifle restorations & rebuilds is my specialty.

Beautiful clean up on that rifle. Just an idea but take it out side for some natural lighting.

Hello 0321Jarhead,

Did you refinish this stock? I'm thinking you might have just cleaned it up real well.

Thanks
