I would be able to help when I head back to California in April and I have a truck. A backhoe would make pretty fast work of removing the overgrown shrubbery, mounds of shotshell cases and shot up crap......

Default More on the Scotts Valley Side

Hi guys,

We shoot over on the Lakeport side and there has been a serious problem here too, particularly late last year. We've been taking a trash bag every time we shoot, but we hope to arrange a cleanup day over on our side too. The rains are here now, so they'll probably have shut the gate, but when it reopens I'd like to see if we can get a few shooting crews to come out with pickup trucks. Post here if you want to join us...we shoot the "range" just north of the Riggs Road entrance and on the "mini-ranges" south off the creekbed. Some idiot dumped a bunch of carpet there last November.

Default Update on North Cow Clean Up

OK, I heard back from the BLM representative. He wrote:

Thank you for your offer. It would be a great service to BLM if we could get local help in maintaining the rifle range on North Cow. We generally try to do a cleanup in late spring after the road is dry enough to bring in a 20-40 yard dumpster. Cal Fire has always been generous with free inmate crew time to conduct this cleanup. We could always arrange an interim cleanup with your group or even a schedule for repeat events if you would be interested. We could supply bags and a smaller trailer to lessen the need for a large dumpster. We also have a need to keep the hillside above the turn into the rifle range (locally known as "Trash Hill") cleaned.

What I see as another need for a volunteer group is the range facility itself. I would like to see the benches refurbished or replaced, steps rebuilt and a retaining wall in front of the parking area to keep vehicles in the parking area. Another need is for a receptacle for the brass and shotgun shell.
Is this something you and your group would be interested in?

Thank You

Jeff

I wrote back to him:

Thanks for your reply. I will post your note to our group and see what we can put together regarding improvements. The group I am coordinating with is people who are members of the Calguns.net forum who use the range at Cow Mountain. They are typically more responsible sportsmen, and are also concerned about range quality, safety, and anything to help keep it as a viable resource.

I do have a few questions:

1) If we did interim cleanups, what time of year would you suggest as being most helpful for your purposes? I am planning on posting several dates on the forum so people can indicate which date(s) work best. That way we can get the best turnout.

2) Refurbishing the benches is a great idea. Maybe the tops could be replaced with concrete?

3) How would receptacles be managed? Great idea, but I can imagine they would fill up pretty quickly.

So, any thoughts about how to do concrete tops on the existing steel frames? Other ideas on how to keep it cleaner between their 'official' clean-ups?

I'll keep you posted on his response as related to timing. A scheduled clean-up seems like it might be a good idea as over the years it could gain momentum.

Default Update on East Cow cleanup (Lakeport side)

Hi,

I talked to the BLM guy and he is going to set up a dumpster for us to do the cleanup. We need to clean the "range" which is just north of the Scotts Creek entrance and slightly up the hill, but also down the river to the south and to the north as well. I don't know if we can even begin to cleanup the number of shotshells on the ground, but we can certainly get rid of the trash and carpet, etc.

The weather is pretty iffy this time of year and I'd like to be able to get as many people as possible, so I'm planning on scheduling a Saturday a bit later on in the spring. If you want to be notified so you can come give a hand, email me: hakuna AT pacific.net

Thanks,
Gary

i was up there a couple of weekends ago and its not limited to the range, on the road up to the range and way up on the other side, when you take a right on the fork in the road to the range instead of left. i am a contractor and can bring tools to help rebuild the benches and retaining wall, maybe even some of my guys. lets get this baby done.

Went up there yesterday there were casings everywhere. even worse then the last time i had gone up. Couldn't even police my brass it was so bad. Just picked up some from my area. I have some people that want to know when we are going to do the cleanup so they can come help out.

It costs about $125 for the BLM to hire a convict crew for a day. A dumpster is probably $200 with a surcharge for the bad road. Let them do it. I think the best thing to do is to post the BLM guys phone number so he knows it should be on the front burner. Before I joined the gun club I did this. At that time the BLM person was a woman who needed reminding, but it got done almost every year.

As far as changing the littering mindset up there, it is usually the problem of telling a half drunk armed person to clean up their act. Not easy.

It is possible that BLM has some discretionary money that can be spent on the tables and benches. Concrete is a great idea.

i'd love to go up and pick up stuff but i only have one can and my suv can barely hold 3 garbage cans and the blm cant just bring a dumster out or people will dump their house trash in it

shotshells are so easy to pick up with magnet tools

digging out the steps and pounding concrete stakes into rail road ties is going to take some skill that right side is pretty steep

Jezzzz, I haven't been up there since I was a kid. Not that it looked good when I was a kid but....now?, that is bad. I got a sis-in-law in Ukiah and would love to join in. Me and my lady don't have 4x4's (lol a camery and a 1966 AMC) but I'm in! Will bring snow shovel and work gloves. Just need a lift from downtown Ukiah....PM me when this is happening

I am more than willing to help clean up too. I would love to be updated on when a date is set to help. Went up a couple weekends ago... my first time at cow mountain and I would love to return more often since I am picking up a new rifle soon and its probably going to be the only range I practice at.

I was shocked at the mess up there and hope to help out as much as I can in keeping it clean.

I don't have 4x4s or vehicle that can hold much. But would love to pitch in if anyone in the Petaluma/Santa Rosa area wouldn't mind me coming along with them to help clean up.

PM me on the date.

the good thing with litterbugs is they are also lazy so not much garbage is past 50 yards of the firing line

Just pick a weekend a few weeks out. Say, early to mid-May. It should be dry by then so we don't get covered in mud, or get our vehicles stuck in it. Get enough people committed, and a BLM big dumpster....we'll whip that place into shape.

weekend May 17/18/19?? Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun??

That will give BLM enough time to coordinate support/logistics, enough time for us to get the word out and plan for it.

Doing it over 2 days would allow different people to show up, so its not limited to one day and who can come on that ONE day.

Pick a date, start a "Cow Mountain Range Clean-up Day May XX and XX" and a sign-up roster. Get enough singed up, and it would show BLM WE care and have NO intention of letting that place go to chit and allow it to be shut-down.

Stay hard, Go Navy.

I think they are on the right parth working with the BLM..
But they will need a good lead time like stated in past posts..
They have to advertise of the road closure and things like this..
Plus waiting a little longer will give the area to dry up...
You dont want to be picking up wet piles of trash thats for sure..
I may be able to talk to the guys at B2 and see if they can advertise the clean up in their store too..
I Was just tlaking about Cow Mountain with them last week when I was in there...

This is a great idea so please keep up 707-banter guys updated..

Good point.

Donnovan, I guess we'll wait for you and your BLM contact to pick the dates.

I'd think a Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun would be ideal
