Question 10/22 extraction problem

Ok so here is the deal, I have a custom 10/22 that I built and about every 4th or 5th shot stove pipes. I usually shoot stingers or minimags but the problem seems to be with any ammo I use (more frequently with bulk
) Here is a list of mods...

20" whistle pig barrel
kidd charging handle
boyd stock

The rifle has these issues clean and dirty, lubed and dry.
do I need a better extractor?
bolt mod?

any help is greatly appreciated!

I had bad extraction issues a long time ago with my first 10/22 when using certain mags- a titanium extractor cleared them all up. $10 bucks and 2 minutes later... no issues
Good Luck!

most likely an easy fix with a different extractor as ventura stated.

The problem may be the combination of a tight Bentz chamber and your ammo choice. I would try it with cheap bulk and see how it does. If that doesn't solve your issue the I'd replace the extractor with something a bit better.

From the Whistlepig site:
Quote:
LR Bentz Chamber * (standard)
* 22 LR Bentz Chamber: Can use standard or match grade ammunition. Hypervelocity ammo (such as CCI Stingers) are not recommended.
BTW if you selected the Stingers for accuracy you went in the wrong direction. You'll get better accuracy from subsonic target ammo and you'll need to do a bit of trial and error to see which brand of target ammo it likes best. Stingers are more for small game.

you can rebuild the whole bolt, ejector, extractor etc for about $35...the most expensive part i purchased for mine was the firing pin...new voltquarsen firing was $20 +

Default Extraction issue

I just put the Volquartsen extractor and eliminated the problem.

The following is from my understanding and experience...YMMV

A) The extractor's function is to extract unfired rounds only.
B) Blowback is what removes the spent casing from the chamber.

If you're stovepiping it is most likely not the extractor but something interfering with the bolt. The normal recoil energy is being lost so the round isn't being ejected cleanly.

1) If you have a rail or scope mount make sure mounting screws aren't somehow extending through the receiver and touching the bolt. I've also seen a glob of loctite extending below the screw causing a friction point.
2) Make sure the upper part of the receiver doesn't have any unusual wear patterns. The finish on my latest 10/22 was getting scraped off (gotta love Ruger's cost cutting) and forming a gritty mess in there. After cleaning...magic.
3) Make sure your recoil spring on the charging handle is clean (no lube) works smoothly and easily.
4) Check for unusual wear on the bottom of the bolt where the hammer is cocked back.

Hope that helps

-Peter

Mostly true...however, the extractor holds the fired case against the breech face as the bolt comes back until the case hits the ejector.
If the case is not in the right place for the ejector to hit it, then it will stovepipe.

For those of you who are handy with tools, just square the hook face of the orginal Ruger extractor...I also slightly blunt the tip of the hook where it touches on the case, alowing a slightly deeper / wider area of hook grab.

Or get a Volq or PC extractor...they do the same thing.

No Stingers in match chambers!

Most interesting I just had the extractor pop out of my well used original 1977 10/22 at the range. I hand several unusual stove pipes which I thought the rifle was getting dirty as I only clean it when it gets so cruded up it quits operating properly.... Then I noticed the problem , I ordered a volquartson extractor.

Excellent info! More tools for the toolbox. Hopefully with all this he will get it resolved.

Good Luck!

Mike
I got the Volquartson extractor the other day and it took me 3 minutes to install . Am I slow? The old extractor was really worn comparing new and old. Plus the new spring in stiffer.

Volquartzen, Exact Edge. I had similar problems with my new out of the box 10/22. This solved the problem.
