Default Steel or Lead shot

Just picked up a 500 tactical. For HD situation, is there a preference between 00 Buck Lead or Steel shot? Both are devastating and will do the 'job'.

Steel - lighter but harder, shot pattern stays together, accurate over longer distances.

Lead - Weighs more, shot deforms slightly, less accurate at longer distances.

This needed to go into the Shotgun forum instead of the gallery. Guess I'll have to post a pic now!

I took my Mossberg out to BLM last week to do my own un-scientific test on HD Shotshells.

The top right is "Remington Ultimate Home Defense" Basically steel shot
The Bottom left is Winchester SXZ 00 Buck.
Both shot from about 15 feet out of a 20" Cylinder bore Mossberg 590

You might want to rethink that steel shot would be a tighter pattern. Also be aware that the Bird shot only penetrated 3/4 of a phone book while 00 buck tore clean through.
So both doing "the job" is in question in my opinion.

If you are worried about over penetration with the 00 buck, test out some #4 buck. You will be very pleased, great pattern light recoil and an all around great round, only problem is finding it.

My preference is that when the shot matters, use steel. Given the expense of steel for general shooting i use lead. #4 buck is great.
