Default Wanting to start long range shooting

I did some searching and got a smattering of info. What I currently own is a Savage 12FVSS .308 with a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50. I am waiting to take delivery on a Ruger M77 in 22-250 with a Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20x50. It's all good but not great equipment however it's better than I am. How should I get started? With the .308 first? I read that using a .308 at a max of 600yards is a good way to learn about ballistics etc. How far is the 22-250 good for? I am not against re-barreling my Savage for a different caliber in order to reach 1000 yards more ecffectively but I want to see if I enjoy it for now.
