Interesting pic, thanks for posting.

1. Today that car would be worth a lot more than the rifle!!

2. I like how the Colt reps do the western look, even the polo shirt one has the cowboy pimp belt.

3. No sling attachment points. Not a police thing in those days?

It's a Delft 3x25 scope. They were the original scope for the Armalite and Colt AR-15s and were made in the Netherlands. Hard to tell, but the rifle looks like an original 601.

It's a 601 with Delft scope and in todays market the combo is worth at least $17-20,000.

That was the typical Colt sales pitch. When they were trying to make it big they always shot up cars to show the penetration.

Not in 1960. Still a very conservative state in those days.

Yeppers, the commie hippies weren't around, just the beats. My folks moved to California in the fifties, have relatives in Arizona. Politically and culturally the two states were pretty much the same (which helps explain the western attire), it's just that Cali had the ocean and Hollywood. And I have no doubt if you back-talked that LAPD LT you could expect the old wood shampoo.

Just looking back at the pic, I realize they did their own version of the watermelon shoot; you can see some melon remains on top of the car.

I stand corrected. I thought it was a 50ish Lincoln, wild-eyed guess around 20-30K, BUT just did a search and they run from around 5K for a project to 100K for a rare convertible.

Its a 20, and that is what they all were at first. In fact, IMHO, the GI 20 round aluminum mags are the finest AR mags ever built.

It only took the LAPD forty years to start allowing patrol officers to carry
the AR platform.
