Default Smooth Bore Barrel length for 12 ga. Slugs?

Slugs in a smooth (18.5" ) bore barrel. Would it be worth it to get the longer barrel (26" / 28"), or will it make any difference? The longer barrel has a slight taper at the end; factory choke. Pretty accurate now with the short barrel; bench rest - pie pan size at 100 yds.

My experience has been that rifle sights improve accuracy more than a change in choke or barrel length.

for shotgun, in my theory...its more accurate with short barrel due to less harmonic vibration in play. By the time the slug leaves the 18.5" the harmonic stopped compared to the 24+ the slug will still be vibrating leaving the barrel with more vibration causing a little less accuracy. But thats my theory.. I dont know if its true.
What I have experianced is that my 18.5 shoots better groups then my 24" barrel.

my rem 1100 barrels come in lengths from 24-32 inches but the slug barrel comes only in 20.

You really don't need more than a 20" barrel. The only thing you would gain is a longer sight radius. Besides, the slug really isn't a long range precision round.

Besides, most of those longer barrels are Mod or Full choked... either of which is really too tight to shoot slugs through.

If you want to actually really have accurate slugs, just get a rifled slug bore.

The longer sight radius will probably make the shooter more accurate. The longer barrel should not make the firearm more accurate.

The modified choke is best to shoot slugs from a smooth bore barrel as it stablizes the slug better then an I/C choke. You get nothing by going to a 20" over the 18.5" except a longer weapon.

So the best smooth bore slug barrel on the market for a Remington 870 is the 18.5" police with rifle sights and fixed modified choke. Have no idea about other manufacturers as I only know the Remington.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.
