Default Questions on J.C. Higgins 12 gauge single shot...

Folks, my father in law gave my son a simple break open single barrel 12 gauge shotgun, 2-3/4 shell, J.C. Higgins model 101.1 (also marked 94C). I took it to the range a few weeks ago to test fire it for safety before letting the kid have at it. Nothing happend when I pulled the trigger (yes there was a shell in there)....? I suspected the firing pin so I took it out when I got home (one small set screw) and low and behold the firing pin was broken off at the base. I ordered a couple of new ones from Numrich so it should be good to go... Question, this gun was designed for lead shot (gun looks very old, no serial no.) so would shooting modern steel shot tear the barrel up pretty quick...? Any precautions I should know about...? I have some modern buck shot shells also, is it safe to shoot buckshot out of this gun....? I have not fired shotguns in some 25 years so I am a bit rusty on the latest "shotgun news". Regards

It's a Savage 94C sold by Sears.

Steel shot did not exist when it was made, I would use only lead...Buckshot is gtg. If she's clean, I'd shoot her. Any doubts, let a decent smith inspect it before shooting.

Nice work on the firing pin fix.

Steel shot is really only for hunting waterfowl, and it costs more. I'd avoid it in your gun, and just have some fun with target loads... Anything but steel and you'll be fine.

A shotgun gunsmith will have a gauge or micrometer to measure the choke diameter.
Best net is to just stick to lead shot. As stated in another post steel is for waterfowl and some places (few) that only allow non-toxic shot (I think there are some in the bay area.)
