you can probably use just about any kind of media, in your burning software there is probably a drive info section it will tell you what your drive can burn.

Without knowing specifics (laptop make, model, etc.) based on what you said, my answer would be yes to CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD+R, but no to any other format. Early adopters, and those manufacturers that go inexpensive, only included drives that are/were capable of writing to CD-R, CD-RW and DVD+R media. If able to write to other media types, it would specifically state CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, or it might just state DVD+/-RW. My experience has been, if it isn't specified, it isn't supported. However, depending on the laptop make/model, it may be possible to upgrade the drive to one that supports these additional formats.

You sure it doesn't have the +/- symbol on there? I've never seen a laptop except some of the older macs that only let you burn one format. More likely that not it burns both formats (possibly RAM too). Especially if it supports dual layer blanks. This program will pull the info out of the drives firmware and tell you what it supports.
