Also remember when running put objects between you and them, i.e. cars, walls, houses. Makes it harded to get shot if one of them actually gets lucky or can actually hit the broad side of a barn. If anyone tells you that your a coward for running, just laugh and walk away because they probably woulda peed themselves if it happened to them.

Ok, i'll say this. When I was growing up in Hayward, the gangbanger types would always start crap with me everyday. I had to fight 2-3-4 at a time.
Violence of action and getting down before they have a chance to react worked 99% of the time. Hit em fast and hard, skateboards make great weapons. I'll kick one dude in the head and grab one and throw him into the others and i'm gone.
That being said, times are different now, everybody has a gun. Get a good "tactical light" and OC. If a situation is unavoidable, hit em with that 200 lumin light a little spritz and run like hell.
If they're blinded by the light and add the chemicals they can't hit you.
I know a LEO will say thats illegal but hey, if i'm still alive and with the same amount of holes I started the day with, thats a plus in my book.

Situational awareness is always the best defense.. Head on a swivel and avoid any areas/during any times that may be questionable..If they look like a problem, they probably are and pride isnt worth a bullet (in my opinion). Beyond that there are several different martial arts and such..Thats a matter of personal preferance. Oc spray, lights etc.. Yea theyre all great tools and no an LEO will not tell you thats illegal as long as you can justify your actions and be able to articulate clearly why/what etc..Self defense in true form is not illegal. But make sure the force utilized is on par with whats considered reasonable and neccessary to stop the threat. Sorry for your run in with those individuals, I know Im not alone when I say glad youre here to ask!

UH...I don't think you'll find a LEO to say that it is illegal to defend yourself.

As stated above situational awareness IS key. Remember that *****heads look for soft targets. Don't look/act like a victim, be aware and think about your options. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Those words have got to be some of the coldest around. So sad.

OP, is this an area that you must be in? (live, work, travel, etc.) Was it on a city street, suburban? alley?
