Like I said I don't like the movement it is distracting when trying to read, but if there was a way that I could turn it off then I don't care, but then again I could just add the ones that are too bad to my ingore list

I also believe animated gifs take up more bandwidth, so to heck with that.

I hate animated crap on my screen all the time. It's okay here and there, but animated avatars are too much IMO

Animated gifs are obnoxious for avatars.
Moreover, it's entirely too easy to have offensive material hidden in an animated avatar to increase the amount of time before it gets caught. e.g. for 30 seconds the image is static, and then it flashes a dong at you. The animated gif spec does allow for different on-screen times of individual frames, and I've seen horrors like this before.
