Default LOL at Sac S/O

I sent in my C&R licence application, and sent a copy to Sacramento County sheriff's office. I got the CLEO copy back today with a sticky note attached to it saying MAIL TO-----> pointing to the address on the back for the ATF office..

This must be something they dont handle very often.. LOL

I am sending it back with a letter...

That's funny.

I sent mine to Rancho PD a couple weeks ago (they contract out with the S/O), and haven't heard anything back from them.

Just curious - who did you address it to? I ATTN'd mine to the Chief, so maybe he knows how to read.

Did you just send a copy of the C&R application without some kind of cover letter explaining you were just following BATF procedures? Because if you did that, I'd send the app back to you with a sticky note also.

As mentioned by jamesob, you don't need to send it back to them. You fully complied with law by mailing it to them. Forget about it and start waiting for your C&R FFL to show up. You get zero extra credit points for any additional interaction with local law enforcement.

Its your job to handle it. It is also up to you what to do with it. Some agencies just file them away some don't. You want me to do your job for you?

I think the cover letter is important here. It isn't part of the letter of the law, but without a cover, one can understand the CLEO or PD not knowing what to do with the app.

I'd send it to the ATF!

Dear ATF,

You might want to send an agent to Sacramento County to explain federal regulations to them. According to this post-it-note, they have no idea how to conform to federal firearms regulations.

P.S. Aren't cops supposed to know what the laws are, at the very least?

Hilarious!!!

You actually received confirmation that you complied with the law. You sent in the copy and you have verification they received it since they sent it back to you. File it away and be done with it!

Sounds like youve got it covered, but just to diffuse some myths on this thread. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure all the paperwork is squared away. Sending it back with a letter seems more than sufficient. Getting it back likely had nothing to do with not knowing what to do,not knowing the laws etc..(What the really??) Thats just rubbish. Without a letter explaining it was the copy it was likely assumed it had been mailed to just them. Alot of folks tend to do that. Theres no incompetence on anyones part, just simple confusion. Hope you get the license soon!

Thats not accurate. If one is taking the time and effort to obtain the license why would you not ascertain that all the required documentation is 100% in order? A sticky note is hardly verification. His letter was the right thing to do.

With large departments you could very easily send it to the wrong address where they DON'T deal with such things. For example, LASD has over 50 mailing addresses just for the courthouses they serve, 20+ patrol stations, and who knows how many admin locations. Very easy to send to the wrong location and get it sent back.

Verification isn't needed. There's no obligation beyond sending it to the CLEO. You did that, you're done. If they CLEO doesn't know what to do with it, that's his problem.

Actually, he was 100% accurate. By mailing a copy of your completed C&R FFL application to your CLEO, your documentation is 100% in order. If your CLEO sends it back to you by mistake or because he has no idea what is going on, your documentation is still 100% in order. If your CLEO says he would like you to come down to the station to discuss the application, you can ignore him and your documentation will still be 100% in order.

Verification is not required. The law says you are required to have "sent" the application to your CLEO. On the application your are only required to initial that you "sent" a copy to your CLEO.

LASO did almost the same thing to me. They called and said I mistakingly sent it to them and I need to send it to BATF, but not to worry, they sent it for me!

I sent mine with no cover letter. It says right on the form "INFORMATION FOR THE CHIEF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER", so hopefully they made sure the person who opens the mail is able to read!!

Actually if they sent it back to me I would just file it and hope I can find it when someone asks about it.
