There was a similar incident in Sac earlier this year, with 2 perps supposedly trying to pry the door open with a shotgun barrel. Resident shot through the opening in the door and hit both of them. I believe it was considered justified.

1145 pm somebody try to rob our home but he didnt make it inside because of the chain lock. I try to push the door to close it, He keep trying but end up spraying us with a fire extiguisher.
I call 911 around 1148 pm. Guess who answer my call, A automated machine and keep me on hold for 7 fuc**** minutes.
When somebody answre my call and ask so many questions about the incident. 1240 am fire department arrive and no police came in. I said to my self " WTH " our life was in danger and it took so long to wait for the help and still no police.

The next day we fuond out that there's a out of prison escape. I call the sheriff department and ask for the incedent report. I took me 3 day to call them every day and still got nothing.

What a bad experience on my first month in Ca.
That's utterly horrible, and I'm sorry for your experience. I've been in this state 28 years and have never had an incident like that.

I would recommend filing complaints to the local law enforcement offices and 911.

Then write a few letters to journalists. They always eat stuff like this up.

if the suspect was known to be armed, it is justified for sure. but without knowing?

Get some better locks. A chain lock is useless. Deadbolts are a good start, but not the end-all be-all. Better than a privacy chain, though.

If a perp is brazen enough to attempt to force their way into an occupied residence, I believe a "reasonable person" would presume that they are armed and a direct threat to life or well-being.

Note to self: Don't use the ATM on Beach Blvd

Seriously... that kind of thing can happen anywhere at any time.
Yes, some neighborhoods are worse than others, and you aren't going to find too many thugs doing home invasions in gated communities... but once outside of the gates, who is going to be a more productive target at an ATM? The guy in BelAir wearing a watch that's worth more than my car, or the single mom with 4 kids pushing a shopping cart through Santa Ana?

(and yes, I've used that ATM dozens of times over the last 20 years)
