Default Indoor range ammo

Very noob question but better ask than never know. What 12gauge ammo can I use at an indoor range? Is the Walmart ammo sufficient in hitting paper targets or is there something else I should be looking at?

Every range is different. Some don't even allow long guns. Best bang for the buck is the walmart 100 packs for 20 something. I practice extensively with this stuff. Occasionally I practice with buck to remind myself of the recoil and resetting aim.

If you are a total noob start doing homework on patterning. Some slug practice will help refine you aiming too. I took a class with ITTS on shotgun usage. I would highly recommend that. My class had novices and LEO guys in it. At the end of the day you will have a respect for the amazing tool a shotgun is... and you will be born again hard!

The only indoor range I have ever been that allowed shotgun is Socal SharpShooters in Torrance. They let me use bird or buck but no slugs. They didnt require any special shotshell (frangible) but its always good to call and ask before you spend money on ammo.

AR build is FINALLY finished...for now...still need to save up money for ammo and extra goodies (Aimpoint, Daniel Defense rail, VFG, and Surefire light)

Yes the Wally stuff is good for paper.
Buckshot for HD.

Iron-sights has no limitations on ammo except for .300WM, .410 and anything steel-cased or steel-cored.

This. Ask the particular range(s) would want to go to about their policy.

Also note: some ranges may be fine with any lead buck/bird/slugs but almost every indoor range will prohibit any steel ammo. So that's another dimension to worry about.

It's extremely rare to find steel-based shotgun ammo. It's all lead or copper or nickel.

call the place up because some places only let you shoot their own ammo (which is marked up at a large rate!)
