I hate those guys with a passion. I was simply walking around in the store getting nasty looks from a guy cursing behind the counter.

it is difficult to haggle successfully over a pristine w german sig, while saliva is dripping from your mouth and you look like you are going to have a seizure if you don't get THAT gun!!! but a few deep breaths later and possibly a trickle down the leg and OCCASIONALLY a few bucks cheaper or an extra magazine may result from said haggling.... depends on who's buying and who's selling.

It depends on the shop and the price. I've ended up with some guns at 50% of marked prices before. But, if the price is fair and I can afford it, I'll usually pay the asking price if I really want it.

Only once. I got $100 knocked off an M1 Carbine. That was the first and last time I ever did it.

I hate when people try to haggle with me at my shop, it happens all the time, so I dont do it when Im buying anything anywhere. I figure if its to much money or I cant afford it then I dont need to buy it.

Back in the early 90's when I tried to get a deal on a Glock 22 and Glock 27 that I wanted to buy together, the guy behind the counter looked at me like I just insulted his mother.
This was at Reed's Sporting goods when they were on Alum Rock Ave. in San Jose. |

You always haggle at the gunstore. Its like buying a car, the dealer and you both know it is marked up quite a bit from list price. They want to sell you the gun, and you want to buy it. They would rather drop a little money off the top then let you walk out. If you shop around, this is the only way to go. One shop I go to has absurd mark ups on their guns, I tell them i know I could get a much better price, list a source and say I would rather shop local. They will cut me a deal.
To clarify - they were trying to charge me $1000 for a USP + DROS out the door. I told them this price was ludicrous, well because only someone who had not shopped around would buy it for that much. They cut it down to 900 including DROS and gave me 6 free range passes (worth $10 each). They also tried to sell me a Remington 870 for $500 plus DROS, again I called them out on it and they cut it down to $450 out the door. If the price is decent I wouldnt try haggling, but if they are on the upper end of the price spectrum it is the only way to go.

I pretty much always get a good deal when I go to River City Gun Exchange and I always buy guns from there on layaway ( 1/3rd-1/2 down and pay the rest when my dros is over) and I have never walked out of there not happy.

As an FYI, we always haggle, unless of course if what we're buying are small items. We haggled with BestBuy a while back and saved some $700 on a washer/dryer/refrigerator purchase we made from them. The price we agreed to was not a sale price, but a negotiated price between the store and the consumer.
Know your strength. If you're buying big ticket items from any place, demand they work with you on the price. I always haggle on gun purchases. TexasAggie |

+1. I went to a local shop to do a PPT transfer recently. I know it is a pain for the gunshop guys to do, so I was trying to shop around for something to buy to make it worth their while. I asked to see the 7.63x39 Saiga on the wall. I almost choked when I saw the price. 699!!!! Maybe 450 to 500, at 699 I will never walk in that shop again.

I haggle at gunshows and parking lots, but not in the gun store itself. Really don't need to. They'll order anything I want from the internet and not mark it up. They'll also meet any price I can find for the same gun.
