Default Long-action AR; how hard would it be?

I realize that this would be a ground-up project, but it seems like the next logical step for modern self-loading rifles.

What would it take to make an AR that would fit .270 win, .30-06, or even 7mm Rem Mag? Ok, that's a magnum-length action, but this is all speculation anyway.

The lower would be fairly straightforward, basically taking the measurements from a .308 lower and stretching the dimensions. But the upper and barrel would be tougher. Location and diameter of the gas hole would probably have to be different than on a .308 barrel.

The bolt-face for a .308 is the same as for a .30-06, so i suppose a modified/lengthened (by design) AR-10 bolt could be used.

I suspect that the gas system would require a lot of tuning.

As for "why?", well, who wouldn't want a modern, ergonomic, auto-loading hunting rifle? It would do a lot to take the wind out of the anti-gunner's (and Zumbo's) sails with regard to EBRs not having any "sporting" or hunting use. The ultimate answer, of course, is "because I can."

What are your thoughts?

Check out the COBB rifle. I think Bushmaster bought the company.

Cobb made a multi-caliber AR lower with a removable magazine module..30-06 included.

I'd love an AR in 7mm Rem.....

CDNN had an AR style rifle (Cobb if memory serves) in 30-06 last year-ish for $2600-ish.
