Default What to send to Afghanistan?

My GF's brother is currently serving his second tour in Afghanistan. She usually sent him a care package (Snacks, candies, gum, etc...) every month or so. Since it's getting kinda boring, I was wondering if anyone served in that region can give me some ideas as to what he might want? He did mentioned that he goes on overnight mission from time to time and I was thinking maybe something related to that? Ideas? Thanks!

My buddy who was up in Iraq last year said the best thing i could send him was instant coffee, because he said that he could trade it for anything that he needed... Just a suggestion.

Unfortunately, silly string cannot be shipped via US mail.

I am in Afghanistan currently, and guys here have been a godsend in sending along packages.

Some wanted/needed items for me and my guys were:

1. Coffee
2. Dip
3. Tapatio (gotta have something to give the KBR food and MRE's some flavor)
4. Cigars

Best thing to do would be to contact him and ask him what HE wants/needs. It may vary depending on if you are at a larger base, or a Forward Operating Base, or a tiny *** Combat Outpost.

I send cigars all the time. I always get pictures of my buds sitting on top of trucks and kicking back with cigars.

I always wanted coffee, Crystal Light, magazines, baby wipes, and tobacco. Good beef jerky was a plus. Porn handles itself. For any other specifics you'd want to ask the next time he contacts anyone, or e-mail him if he is on a FOB and has access to the internet.

I'm curious about the hot sauce comment -- is Tapatio the sauce of choice in Afghanistan to make bad food taste good? What about other brands, or super spicy habanero sauce?

Thanks for all the suggestion! I believe he is in FOB, and does not have internet connection. He usually calls when he is back on the main base. I will ask him next time!

When I was deployed, some good group of citizens sent us about 200 cases of those freeze pops. It's basically fruit flavored sugar water in a plastic pouch that you freeze. But, they hit the spot when it's 120 in the shade. I know you can get them at Walmart, usually in those large boxes next to the register.

I sent out 68 lbs of goodies to a buddy in TF31 last week.

A friend of mine, who was an armor guy in Viet Nam, and his girlfriend shook down the bar (Dirks) for care package donations and away we went.

Jerky, gatorade mix, fancy American TP, nuts, aa and aaa batteries, led flashlights that clip to your hat, candy, sunscreen, aloe vera, reading material, Spongebob Squarepants bandaids, an ugly clip-on tie, soap, goldbond, eye drops, dustmasks, goggles and spare lenses, socks, chapstick, AR cleaning supplies, inflatable camping pillow, sleeping bag liner, those little bandana thingys you soak in water to keep you a little cooler, bug juice, anti-bug juice, soap and Febreeze. Maybe some other stuff I can't think of at the moment.

Good times.....

I was in "The Ghan" in 04. there are lots of things i would love to get in a package. powered gatorade is definatly a must. Cigarettes and dip are also good because the Haji cigs aren't very good, I didnt smoke but when guys who do get low they are willing to do anthing for a smoke and that comes in handy when there is late night guard duty or sheet burning working parties. Magazines of any type are also good. Porn is worth more than gold over there, to our guys and the haji's, the haji's would haul cases of water up a hill all day for a hustler. Make sure its good raunchy porn too because the PX/BX will only have playboy. Thick socks and new underwear are also prized. I know I recieved a package of boxers from my wife after we had been out in the field for nearly two months. The fresh smell of clean clothes reminded me of the GAP. Its simple things like that that will remind you of home and make you feel appreciated. Finaly the best thing you can send are hand written letters as often as you can. There is nothing more demotivating then when mail call goes and you don't get anything. Thats all I can think of right now
