Does part of the Gas or Bullet exit the muzzle first
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y9a...ture=emb_title
73,000 frames per second video.... Figured it was worth posting

Not high speed but Über speed photography. Thanks for the glimpse. As Mr. Spock would say, "Fascinating."
Reminds me to offer that some of the best advances in technology are in thanks to sports. Olympic competition driving training the body or pushing limits of equipment. America's Cup sailing producing wild tangents that discovered applicable components of flow dynamics and composite fiber construction. Tour de France certainly has a black eye over the human performance aspect, but the improvement of related mechanical gear and even positive areas of pharmacological advancements are beneficial. Yes, two of the biggest drivers of tech are war and space travel. Sports too pushes performance and science scurries to keep up.

There would be some gas slipping pas the bullet until the pressure pushes the bullet into rifling and seals the bore.

And I'd be willing to bet that even then, there isn't a perfect seal between the bullet and the bore.

Would be interesting to see a comparison with poly rifling to standard sharp rifling. I would think poly would seal better..... now to hit google

I vote for regular rifling to seal better. The bullet needs to get upset quite a lot more to fill the poly rifling than the round barrel and rifling of a few thou. The air in the barrel ahead of the bullet gets compressed and shoved out at a high rate of speed too.

Try pushing a bullet down a bore by hand sometime. May not be a hermetic seal, but it's pretty damn good.

But seriously, it would be really difficult to get material into the sharp edges of the grooves. Poly rifling is really just a smoothed out form of lands and grooves, eliminating those sharp edges. I will have to look at the range for spent bullets and see if I can tell them apart. |

Interesting video.
Remember, there is still air (with moisture) in the barrel before firing. Once fired, the bullet pushes the air out the muzzle. The rapidly accelerating bullet create a "bow wave" (like a boat in water). When the air exits the muzzle, the pressure drops and any surrounding moisture will condense. This might account for contribution to the "cloud" before the bullet exited. Also I noted the the handgun appear to be a Para. The muzzle velocity shown was 1200 fps, so 9mm? And ditto the earlier comments about "not a perfect seal". In this screen grab, you can see a small puff at the ejection port. Likely gases escaping before the brass case expands to seal the chamber or perhaps from the primer. 2021-01-13_8-53-19.jpg |

Don't forget also that there is air in front of the bullet that is pushed out before the bullet leaves the barrel too. I wonder if the leading puff is residue filled air and that no gas is pushing past? Though surely there must be some leakage.
Also nice to see how the confirming video of the slide not moving until the bullet is on it's way.

Are they just shooting in his basement? And it's interesting to see how much powder is unburnt in that short barrel.

Part of the puff before the bullet is the old powder and the air in the bore being pushed forward of the bullet.
Every shot leave some powder residue in the bore. The next shot pushes it out. There can also be a small amount of gas leakage, but most of that first puff in the mythbusters video looks like the bore air and the old powder.

I'm not sure why, but your photos rarely show up for me. Is the hosting site using some sort of tracker? I'm assuming my software is blocking it for some reason.

I have the same problem with pics from one particular CalGunner, not this one. I assume it's some difference in the way different browsers handle the pic attachments, but that's just a guess.

I've tried viewing his photos using Brave, Chrome, and Edge. It doesn't work on all 3.

Pretty sure it was the same for me using FF and Edge. Must be something different about how a few people encode video attachments.

Probably 357 sig or a very light bullet 9mm.
I didn't watch to the end of the 2nd part of the video. Does it eventually show casing ejection?
