Default CA tac-14 options???

[/QUOTE]I have a Rem. 870 DM (box fed)18” barrel, 6 round mag pump action.
Q- in this configuration, would there be any restrictions on replacing the stock with a Factory raptor type grip stock? It would still be over 26” in length.
Been asking Google , cant find any. Feedback please

You have the California legal 18” barrel model, and are already meeting the legal minimum of 26 inches -you are only making it longer by adding that grip so you are good to.

Conversely If you lived in a free state and had one of the free state models with the 14 inch barrel and a raptor Grip installed from the factory to meet the overall 26 inch length requirement, and wished to take the raptor Grip off and replace it with a vertical grip and or vertical grip/brace then that would be illegal.

Because it would be under 26 inches.

We can’t have that gun here in California anyway.

Although there may be somewhat complicated ways to legally own it here.
But that info would be found in another thread.

OK so I read your post incorrectly you are going shorter as you’re going from a shoulder stock to a grip only.

You still have the legal 18 inch barrel on it and will still be over 26 inches so that is fine.

With either a standard pistol grip or the raptor -either will get you over 26 inches. Because you have the 18 inch barrel.

Example:

Turners doesn’t seem to be marketing any sort of Remington pistol grip only shotgun right now, but they do sell the Mossbergs when they can keep them in stock:

Lead launcher, my boy lives in AZ, and I drool over that S/A tac 14 alone with all the other toys available. I’m ready to move but the wife still is too young for retirement

That bottom pic is a brace, so it can be used with the short barrel in other states

That's not a stock, it's a folding arm brace.

The 14" barrel Title 1 Other being good to go, is dependent upon which State it is in.
^ Not legal in CA, CT, HI, MA, MD, MI, NJ, and NY.

Not a stock.
It’s a brace.
If you live in a free state and have one of these over 26” overall length “other”
firearms and wish to do anything to it that makes the overall length when measured under 26”(like a more vertical grip or folding brace) then you must first file and be approved for a form 1 tax stamp.

ATF would measure that with the brace folded.
So top pic is a “firearm”
Bottom pic is AOW.

If that was a stock then the gun would be a short barreled shotgun.
Which would also require a form 1 and tax stamp.

So a 14” barrel, no matter what config, even at 26.5” total length is a no-go?

Under Federal laws...

The Remington TAC-14 is classified as a Title 1 Other.
^Firearm with a less than 16" barrel length + a greater than 26" overall length + no shoulder stock.

Under CA laws...

There is no "other" firearm. CA classifies firearms as a "handgun" or a "long gun" ("rifle" or "shotgun") and forces firearms to fit into those categories.

Which means the Remington TAC-14 is classified as:
1. a handgun. (firearm with a less than 16" barrel length). [PC 16530(a) & 16640(a)]
2. a SBS (firearm that shoots shotgun shells and has a less than 18" barrel length). [PC 17180(a)]
3. an unconventional pistol (firearm with a non-rifled barrel that has a barrel length of less than 18"). [PC 17270]
4. an unsafe handgun. (manually operated pistol that has not passed CA DOJ safety testing : not listed on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale). [PC 31910(b)(1),(2),(3)]

Therefore, from the factory, the Remington TAC-14 (Title 1 Other) is CA illegal (import, make, transfer, or possess) for non-exempt persons.
~Exempt person = Gov/Mil/LE agency and FFL/SOT with a Dangerous Weapons Permit for SBS.

If the Remington TAC-14 was made into a Title 2 AOW, then it would be exempt from CA SBS laws and CA unconventional pistol laws.
However, it would still be considered an unsafe handgun. Which means it can only be transferred via exemption (LEO sale, PPT, etc).
