If you want to reduce the stress on your garand buy yourself a gas system from www.mccannindustries.com
and read their tutorial, they modify garands into 338 & 458 mag rifles with a punch. The op rods are 'bent' for parts www.northridgeinc.com
and for complete rebuilds go to www.miltecharms.com
I modified my garand with a Redfield Hooded Globe Front sight with inserts that is available from Brownells. If you want a copy of the 3/86 Am Rifleman article "Reloading For The M1 Rifle" send me your emaill and I'll send it to you it allows for improved accuracy in fact I & other club members used the data to make up a load for a successful mule deer hunts in Colorado. If you have a new garand you can go to www.surplusrifle.com
for info, the CMP site has lubing instructions where to use grease and where to use oil. I set up garand qualification matches for our gun club in yucaipa from 1980 thru 1986 had lots of participants including sports writers, law enforcement and shooters from S Calif.
