Default Are d-guard Bowie knives legal on cali?

The title to the thread is pretty self explanatory. Are d-guard Bowie knives legal in California I just have to make sure prior to purchasing one.

Hey, Jes!

I think this thread may have the answer you seek.

I have to say I don't think they are kommiefornia legal. Not positive though.

I'm sure if you don't find the answer at the thread above, someone will be along shortly to correct or confirm my thoughts.

From a lawyers site

Brass knuckles” (truly called “metal knuckles” in California law – see the new Penal Code section 12020 21810) are illegal. It’s a potential felony to possess metal knuckles. The definition is:

” . . .any device or instrument made wholly or partially of metal which is worn for purposes of offense or defense in or on the hand and which either protects the wearer’s hand while striking a blow or increases the force of impact from the blow or injury to the individual receiving the blow. The metal contained in the device may help support the hand or fist, provide a shield to protect it, or consist of projections or studs which would contact the individual receiving a blow.”

For that section, the device had to be made wholly or partly of metal, but composites materials, such as resins, hard plastics or wood were excluded. Penal Code section 12020 21810is a “wobbler” – it can be either a felony or a misdemeanor.

But now there’s a code section that also covers composite knuckles: Penal Code section 12020.1 21710:

Any person in this state who possesses, commercially manufactures or causes to be commercially manufactured, or who knowingly imports into the state for commercial sale, keeps for commercial sale, or offers or exposes for commercial sale, any composite knuckles or hard wooden knuckles is guilty of a misdemeanor.

The good news is that it’s a misdemeanor. The bad news is that it’s a misdemeanor and a criminal offense that carries potential jail time, probation, fines and will be on your record indefinitely if you’re convicted.

Pic snipped/brevity.

I think that would be a stretch to be considered brass knuckles. If so, does that mean I can conceal it, even though it's a straight blade? How could it be both, brass knuckles and a straight blade?

You won't get a "it's legal" answer because nobody can know.

Also, "legal" for what? To posses, to carry, to conceal?

What you're trying to avoid with the D-guard is the "knuckles" PC that hermosa mentions (even though those are old code numbers).

WTF? Is there a coherent thought in there somewhere? What is a "straight blade?" And why do you think you can or can't conceal either knuckles or a "straight blade?"

Here's the PC for "knuckles":

Often times, and this certainly is one of these cases, the question posed in the OP is too specific to be answered simply by reading and analyzing the code section.

I think we would have to look for caselaw to find a more pointed explanation, but that's assuming there is caselaw on such a thing.

I always thought that the only knife that is considered to also be brass knuckles is the WWI style trench knife... like this: http://www.budk.com/Trench-Knife-WWI-1918-Replica-1088

... and that is because the rings stay tight to the fingers.
