Yep! Highly recommended. Dave usually has an inside track on everything related to Solano CCW.

Dave and staff are very professional. Will qualify you on new gun swaps at their home range and file paperwork.

Baptist is very straight to the point. I had a great experience with him. He covers the material and also provides you with scenario questions to encourage critical thinking.

Agreed... he talks quick at times and quizzes you in what you think you know and for renewals what you should know and not forget. I’ve had him for one initial class and two renewals. His later classes were in scenarios and dealing with an environment where you have to escape or fight.

Default CCW Interaction Notification

As per Solano County FAQ:

"I was in a situation where I displayed and/or utilized my concealed weapon. Do I need to notify the CCW unit?
Yes. The licesee shall immediately notify the CCW unit should they display or utilize the concealed weapon."
Has anyone actually done this process and or can tell me who/how it is to be done to stay compliant?

I had an interaction where I pulled my firearm. Vallejo PD was onsite and took all of my CCW information. That evening I sent an email to: Solanoccw@solanocounty.com

Email had narrative, and links to the video footage. I have not received any confirmation from the CCW unit. Is this just something that I leave alone as I have complied, or should I be trying to get a confirmation from them that they received my notification?

Anyone with experience on this?

I was you a few years back also in December downtown Vallejo. Officers came up took a report, told them what happened etc. in short I emailed the Sheriff Dept. and addressed it to the lady working the desk at the time and the Sheriff and provided them my case number and advised them of how I was thankful I was able to have my LTC and how it allowed me to get away from the 3 guys trying to rob me with a gun. They emailed me back in a day or so and noted it would be added to my file and told me to be safe etc. When I renewed I now answer the question that I have had an incident regarding a firearm and note my case number and the circumstances using my LTC for defense. Never an issue since...I can’t imagine being denied a renewal after that case...I’ll always carry....having said that I recently moved to Texas...so now I am a fan of reciprocity going through as I will certainly be back to Vallejo to visit family that has left yet.

That is my experience. I think you are on the right path. There could be some new fine print since my last renewal but I think you are good in making the attempt and following up to CYA.

Just keep that case number and a copy of the email with access to your sent items long term. If they don’t answer in a week I’d email them again with the case number and advise them your email is requesting a confirmation of receipt and that if you don’t get one you’ll assume the issue closed.

I feel like it may be a bit slow due to the holidays.

OK - I must be missing something! Got a link to the FAQ? I must be overlooking something.

I was attempting to clarify the specifics of notification.....as per the FAQ.

I sent an email....no response. Left a voicemail....no response. Short of showing up at their office I'm not quite sure what the CCW Units expectation is/was, hence I was seeing if anyone else had been in the same situation.

Clarifications are good but I still can't find any FAQ. Am I not understanding something here?

I submitted my modification online on 12/14/17

Still waiting as well. Figured the staff is probably short handed from people taking time off from work due to the holidays.

No you are probably just not finding the CCW FAQ that they have posted here: https://www.solanocounty.com/faqs/categoryqna.asp?id=74

I DID receive a phone call this morning from the CCW unit. All is good, and notification is required when an incident occurs. Email is acceptable notification as per the coordinator this morning. On a plus the coordinator did give me some valuable feedback on my interaction.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks Scott. No wonder I couldn't find it. There isn't an obvious link from the SCS or Concealed Weapons Permit pages to the FAQ. Bookmarked now!

Glad everything worked out OK.

I actually ran into Dan Marshall when I was picking up a shotgun at blue steel firearms in suisun. I talked to him briefly about his views when he told me he was running for sheriff and he said (paraphrased) "usually the number one question I get is about CCWs and I support that and would like to streamline the process." That was very heartening to hear but then again I was at a gun shop so it's possible he was just telling me what I wanted to hear. He seemed like a decent guy. I have been very happy with sheriff Ferrera and I appreciated how the Solano office handled the fires back in October.

What major handgun manufacturer was the first to offer a high capacity, polymer framed pistol (hint: it was not Glock)?

What caliber was the Seecamp originally offered in?

Which one produces more energy: the .32 H&R Magnum or the .327 Federal Magnum?

Just curious how long renewals are taking these days? Don't want to bother SC office, i know they are busy. I submitted all my paperwork 2/7/18. I was told at qualifying they are calling people in a week or two to pick up their CCW.

Does anyone know what Dan Marshall, the candidate for sheriff, stance is on CCW? I checked his campaign's website and there is no mention if he is pro civilian CCW. I'm a little concerned because he seems to be running on changing things.

I'm pretty satisfied with the way Ferrara is running things. My CCW renewal only took about a week.

From what I've seen with his replies on FB nothing should change from the current sheriff.

I was just about to ask the same question. Driving around town today and I seen the big “Dan Marshal for Sherriff” sign.
I’m a little worried he won’t be as ccw friendly as Ferrera has been.

I posted the question to Marshall via his campaign page. He said he would continue to issue and that he would accept "Self Defense" as good cause.

In all honesty, I'm happy with how Ferrara is handling things.

That’s pretty much how I look at it. Why risk losing what we already have. Ferrera is the only sheriff in the entire Bay Area issung permits.

I am glad to hear this, I just got back from a barbecue at a friend's house, and four of them said they got a CCW with this Sheriff. And self-defense was the only reason they requested it.

Just to be clear: Are you saying all they wrote down on their CCW app for a Good Cause statement was "self defense" and nothing more and they got issued CCWs from Solano Co SO?

That's what they claimed. One guy and his wife and two other of his friends. One guy mentioned that he said he likes to go hiking in the woods with his family and wanted to be arm legally for self-defense. I can't prove any of it but that's what they told me.

Well, if that's the case, the CA CCW GC map may need updating: Solano may now be "dark green." I've PMed baggss re. this.

Have any CGNers been issued Solano Co SO CCWs using only "self defense" as GC? If so, or if you've tried and been discouraged/denied by the SO, please post to let us know.

So the whole hiking thing, while technically SD, isn’t the same as just putting SD on the application. That being said, Solano may be more dark green than light green but we need more input.

I now wish I had better details, the conversation came up just a few minutes before my wife and I were leaving the Barbecue. And these were friends of a friend so I don't know them very well, but if I get a chance I'll try to get more information from them.

But that's what only 1 of the 4 used. Hopefully Bigtwin will be able to find out what the other 3 used too.

Yes, since "dark green", IIRC, is for both counties that accept SD/PP = GC and counties that require more, but very little more (and proof of that very little more).
