So, Boss - is your latest strategy working or did I log in too late this morning and missed all the action?

there are still a few trickle of spam bots.

can't the rule be that new users can't create threads or post any links for like 1 week? would the forum botters be even able to work around that since it is all automated? i mean can they program these bots to sign up, then idle for 1 week then post?

or even a new user can't create more than 1 new thread a day. until the probation period is over.

Can the forum software make it so you have to have so many posts before you can start a thread?

You can, but they could just put their spam links into existing threads that they didn't start. You have to prevent them from posting period.

FYI,

Looks like several spammers are trying to get past the spam blocker by showing post count > 0,1 in the initial message.

Looks like they're figuring out how to get past whatever recent anti-spam countermeasures were employed.

The problem with spam threads is that they show up at the top and it's hard to get to the real content.

So, how about we start bumping legitimate threads every time there is an array of spam threads at the top? Since mods are not up at all times of day and night, this is an easy way to push spammers down and can be done by anyone. For example, we could just post "spam bump" in legitimate threads and get them to the top. Then, mods can delete not only spam threads, but also the "spam bump" placeholders.

The spammers can try to fight back by bumping their own threads, but we can limit who can "spam bump" threads - unlike limiting who can start new threads, the ability to bump can be much more restrictive without affecting real new users.

Like I said before the best way to stop this is the make all "first posts" be approved by a moderator. Since these will never be approved their posts will never show up on the forum and they will go away. I've used this on multiple forms I moderated and found it's the only way to stop them.

they dont care about position,

calguns is a popular site and gets indexed really fast by google and the other spiders.

their goal is to create links and reputation to their links by being found by google and as soon as possible and and as many times at possible.

Imagine it like fast starting the link for it to go viral.

google sees this site and all their other spam posts on hundreds/sites of sites that they spammed, with their posts, and google says "oh this seems to be a very popular link, let me put it on top of the search results"

rinse and repeat

This ^^^

It was never about getting Calgunner to read these posts. It is always about search engine optimization. They could care less if we see these posts, they only care that Google sees them. And for that, they only need one post. After that it doesn't matter what happens.

Good to know. I imagined they wanted to reach the community, not play the "quick SEO games" - the posts get deleted quickly and they usually link to active events.

How effective would it be to work with the search engines and use their SPAM reporting? Create a script that submits fake links to eliminate them from ranking algorithms?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the the "modification" is going up in flames as I type this. There are so many spams that it's pointless to continue to read the forums.

Maybe the solution would be manually approving new members. Newbies could fill out out a form that includes something obscure, like "What's your favorite gun?" I would think that a generic bot wouldn't be able to give a legitimate answer, so it would be easy for a moderator to sort out the spammers.

How many new subscriptions come along daily? If you got 5-10 of your A-List Calgunners to assist in the task, it might be manageable. You might loose a couple potential newbies who demand instant access, but the spam might be driving away a greater number of serious users.

Another board I used to mod required check-in at the "Welcome to X" thread, and once posted, a mod would enable their account across a subset of topics. There were incremental post count limits for the more popular topics.

The issue here is one of bots. I'm not an admin, so can't tell if this is a human registered account that is then bot enabled, or if it's a bot for the whole process. But the postings are the front-end search anchors for malware sites posing as free-stream feeds. Those sites are almost all hacked local government sites and others with outdated CMS software.

On some of my own servers, I simply started blocking net prefixes that originate in Asia or other parts of the world I would not have any normal need to communicate with, and that reduced the spam and hack attempts by about 75%. That's not kosher to a lot of admins, as it's a drastic reneg of internet manners, but bad actors deserve to lose their access. A compromise in that mechanism would be to only enforce the most stringent requirements from suspect netblocks instead of an outright ban. I chose to ban them, however.

Captchas are about the only thing that will stop a bot. Even some bots have rudimentary AI and image recognition skills. But, if it's a human registration then that's not as effective.

Combined, however, a reg captcha and funneling new users into a small subset of forums will limit the spam quite well.

Another simple check would be to use a Bayesian filter to weigh the posting content to the number of links in the post and negatively index spam postings for future lookup.

A further check would be to use something like a realtime intrusion detection engine. They work by hooking into the front-end firewall and blocking IP addresses temporarily or permanently based on traffic patterns to your origin servers. IDS can be incredibly effective against automated attacks.

It's also necessary to plug the security holes in the forum software. Your best efforts will get you nowhere if there is a vulnerability in the registration and accounting processes for the forum software. This site is currently two minor versions behind the lastest stable release: 3.8.11.

Best
