Default XD Slide won't come off for cleaning

I was trying to fieldstrip my XD for cleaning. Checked and see make sure its empty and nothing on chamber. After I lock the slide and push up the lever up, released the slide then pull the trigger, the darn slide wont come off. Seems like there something stoping it. I have a feeling its the guide rod. I have change the guide rod into a full guide rod. Is there a chance that is causing it, and does anybody knows how I can take it apart?

Pull the trigger. You can sometimes catch the slide on the sear.

Hmm
I'm not sure then
If you put it all back together does it feel right ?
slides back and forth as usual or does it bind then too?

Which XD do you own and what do you mean by "full" guide rod? As per the XDs, they all looked to have full guide rods unlike some 1911s. Do you mean you changed the hollow guide rod that came with it to one which was solid? Is it a 4" standard XD with the captive spring assembly attached to the guide rod?

This may or may not be what's happeneing to you, but since you're stuck, I'll throw this out there in hopes itll help you.

On my XD, the guide rod slipped off the end of the groove where it's resting on the barrel.. I was able to fix this by repositioning the recoil rod back onto teh groove..

I believe the XD recoil rod has a hole in the front? You can try to insert a small allen wrench or if you're able to partially move the slide, you can try grabbing the front of the rod with some vise grips.. Once you have a firm grasp on it, try pulling on the rod "forward" and "out" of the hole.. As I mentioned before, you'll want to try and reposition the back end of the rod onto the barrel (as per the normal way you would seat it).. Keep trying and envision where/how the rod sits on the barrel lug..

Good luck.

In order to field strip an XD you have to dry fire the gun. It is a poor design feature that has been "fixed" with the XD-M models. Read the instruction manual and it will have the proper procedure for field striping your handgun.

+1 for this.

There's a guy on youtube who shows that this occasionally happens. You can sit there all day and try to bang the slide off with a hammer and it won't budge until you reposition the rod.

Is the slide in the closed position or is it stuck further back? If its getting stuck on the trigger assembly, I know you can stick a flathead screwdriver in the back and pry it up to get it off. I would research that a bit though, having never done it myself.

Best of luck!

Yes I did. He needs to do it in the proper order of field striping the gun hence my reference to the instruction manual. Did you read my entire post?

And apparently you are one of those who feels the need to jump to his own defense even though his logic was flawed from the onset. Backing up a failed suggestion with a failed argument just makes you look silly. But then again so does acting like a guy is going back and forth with you just to get the last word. It is disrespectful especially when there was no intent to do such a thing. Please read and comprehend before you post. It stops the spread of bad information and plain sillyness. Feel free to post whatever you want. But if it is condesending or agruementive you can certainly believe I have the right to respond.

mvpatriot was man enough to admit his mistake.

Titans11 - Good luck getting your XD fixed. I've had my XD for 4-5 years but that never happened to me. I don't think the GR being DGR is the culprit.

Thanks!

It appears from what I heard it could be the guide rod since i changed, it happens from time to time. I'm trying to see how i can get it back in to place but I can't even see the darn thing inside.

Take the magazine out and after the slide is release make sure to reassemble it with a perfectly center guide rod.
