Default What would the AK folks do?

Get an AK-101 from Henderson Defense or their Saiga AK-103?

Is the $200 difference going toward pride of owning a Russian AK or is there something more to owning a converted Saiga?

Thanks.

I dont know if the HDI AK101 is really made in Russia. I DO however know that an original Saiga is made in Russia but the HDI one is made in their company. If you buy a stock Saiga and convert it yourself...you can save more money although the HDI Saiga will save you the time and effort. IMO...an AK is an AK and you really cant go wrong with either choice.

I like the AK-101 more, but Saiga's aren't bad.

Yeah, I'm currently lookin for an ak too, and I'd like to know about this decision too.

Also the Ak101 listed on Henderson, is it 5.45 or 7.62? It comes with a 7.62 cleaning kit, but I assumed all 101's were 5.45?

Their AK101 is 7.62, their Saiga 103 is also 7.62. Factory Izhmash Ak101's(and 102's) are 5.56. If your lookin into gettin an AK HDI's are top notch, I still need to scrape up the money for my s12 conversion. Damn being a broke *** colledge student.

For an AK plinker with a BB or Radd setup, the single-stack WASR is kind of a deal at $299. No way to accidentally slap a pre-ban double-stack full-cap into it... I wonder what their "certification" actually covers.

I'd go with the 101 with a MMG. You can put the AK-74 style brake on it after you get it.

I just don't like the weld-filled holes on the other receiver, but that's just me.

I like the AK 101 the best out of the two. I will take a Polish over them.

There is a slight difference between the Saiga AK conversion and all the others they have listed; the gas block.
A real AK-103 (the ones the military gets) have the 90 degree gas block that you can see in the picture along with a litany of internal upgrades. To that end the Saiga conversion is as close as you can get.

As for the AK 101, I don't consider it one, namely because of the caliber. As was pointed out a real 101 is 5.56 NATO, the AK 101 HDI has is 7.62 X 39 so its really like a very high quality AKM with black furniture. If they had it in the correct caliber (5.56) I would probably get it.
For me the small design difference in the Saiga 103 and the long list of upgrades HDI listed to make it a 103 was the reason I paid the $200 extra when I bought it on monday

Basically you can distinguish all of the AK 100 series as follows:
AK 101 - 5.56 NATO - full stock side folder
AK 102 - 5.56 NATO - triangle side folder & shorter barrel
AK 103 - 7.62 X 39 - full stock side folder
AK 104 - 7.62 X 39 - triangle side folder & shorter barrel
AK 105 - 5.45 x39 - triangle side folder & shorter barrel
(There is no AK 106)

Hope this helps.

I think I would buy the 101 but they both look cool.

AK 102/104/105 have the front sight/gas block combo and the short barrel and have the same polymer side folding stock as the others, all century series AK's have the same stock, only the front end is different. Hope this clarifies it

Ya there is a way to do it like the galil, it involves modifying the latch that keeps the recoil spring in place on the rear trunnion so the top cover dosnt move around, and some other stuff that I cant remember, look around on the akforum.net, some one did it over there.

Ive stayed away from all the AK/Saiga threads up untill now, simply because I had no interest in picking one up right then. Now that I want to pick one up.. ive been looking at all my options as well.

Those beater WASR's are out of the question.. even for a cheap foot in the door.

But to be quite honest with you guys.. I honestly dont see a difference between the AK-101 or the saiga AK-103 from the links vinny posted . Both black polymer models look exactly the same to me.

Not even, you just haveto look for more than a few seconds and youll see the 103 has a 74 style break an gas block, the 103 is a loose ak103 clone and the 101 is a AKM with polymer on it, swap out it for some eastern block wood and youve got a standard AKM style rifle.

Negative, we'd build more AK's ourselves from kits we stockpiled 2 years ago...

An ak is an ak. With that being said buy both if you got the funds. If you don't saiga rifles are a good way to go.

A buddy of mine says the Saigas are top notch. I think the real question though, is how much ammo you will want on hand. 7.62X39 is relatively inexpensive, and readily available.

Aren't both AKs that Henderson Defense is offering, AK101 and the converted Saiga, 7.62?
