Default Priority 1.. an AK

Due to the up & coming political climate, I have decided that priority 1 now is getting my AK started. I am highly considering a Red Lancaster from CWS, I would like CWS to install the mag lock for me, but I am having a hard time deciding on which one to do, BB or morepoop4u's mag lock kit, which is cheaper.

So I think this is what I want:
Lancaster Red.. $629.00
BB $30.00
2 of these babys at $35.50
Cost for CWS to install BB ~$35Shipping to FFL ~$25.00
Cost for FFL to transfer with DROS $75.00
Tax ~$Unknown (I hate math)

Roughly $840-900.. boy that adds up quick...

Now to confirm a few things..

CWS has no problem shipping to a CA FFL, and complying with the new CFLC?
CWS can install the BB for me? Because I need that done for my FFL to accept it.

Now am I stupid, but the BB goes on the actual firearm, not the mag right?

Do I have all my bases covered here? I mean as far as being legal? How do you like the setup (how do those who own the Lancaster like it?, ease of BB use, e.t.c) I really want it to look as close to the real thing as possible, but still be fully legal, being as the ban is all about looks, I wanna stick it to these liberal loons..

Another alternative is to build it, if you have the tools (or borrow them) and some skill. The BB is attached to the rifle.

I thought about it as I do have some tools, but I am not sure I want too as I am not totally sure about how to do it. I would rather just buy one ready to go out of the box.

If you are looking for cheaper have them ship the AK to your FFL with the pistol grip detatched, and you can do whatever you want with your mag lock setup later. There is nothing wrong with shipping it without any mag lock if the pistol grip is detatched and there are no other "evil" features. I have the JJPerl Bullet Button. You should know that a bullet doesn't even fit inside the hole in the metal shroud that covers the mag release. But it keeps me legal while not looking ugly. I don't have any experience with morepoop4u's mag lock, it looks like a pain to switch mags without committing a felony. But good call on the Lancaster from what I hear, the red furniture loks great.

Go gripless. The pistol grip doesn't add anything to the utility of the rifle, but detachable mags do.

Buy a pair of Saiga's for the same price and you wont scare the old lady next door. I got my pair of 7.62's for well under 900$ O.T.D.

Plus it's not hard to convert a Saiga to full black rifle glory. Nothing like a Russian made AK

I got my AK from Henderson Defense for under $500 and had it shipped minus PG. I installed a MM and was good to go. Saved me some $$$ and the rifle works like a charm....and I can drop mags too.

The idea of the build, is that from a stand point, it looks like the real thing. It's my FU to the legislature for passing a ban that has nothing to do with function, and everything to do with looks.

Plus my neighbors are already scared of me, I mean they watched me unload 2 ammo cans and all the rest of my gun gear yesterday from the car..

But I will kick around those ideas...

Try finding a used AK on ar15.com. It's a lot cheaper and they usually come with cleaning kits, magazines and other accessories.

The hard part is finding someone who will actually ship it to CA.

I think that Lanworld inc had good prices on AKs... they will ship with grip removed. You should be able to DROS for $50 if you use Bob, or... maybe give JK Supply a call?

You should be able to get a WASR 10 for just over $400 + $50 dros with Bob+30 for a mag lock ( I like the jumbo panda because it can be removed if desired).

Good news is you have lots of choices in here

So those WASR 10's are OLL's? Sweet..

I just took notice to the Cope's Distributing AK flats for $12.00, I keep wondering if I can make my own cheaper. Problem is I don't have the tools or the skills.

JK Supply would be doing my transfer for me, I know he knows the OLL laws, and they told me as long as the pistol grip is removed or mag lock installed it's good to go.

I just picked up a black Lancaster from CWS a couple of weeks ago. I purchased it gripless and overall I am very happy with it. Shooting gripless isn't as bad as one might think either.

Dude,

unless you want to build an AK for the experience of building one... and ESPECIALLY if you want to build from a flat... I suggest you just buy one. The time, money, and effort involved in a build that will run you nearly what a pre-built rifle may not be worth it to you. (for example...kiit=$200, receiver=55, dros = 50, compliance parts=75, rivets=10, shipping=25... so you would spend over $435 for the components alone??)

I enjoyed my build... but it was a tuff experience and I spent ALOT of $$ on the tools, wasted a couple of flats, etc.

If you just want an AK, buy one. Dont build it. If you want to experience building one, I suggest you do not bend one up your first time. Go with an NDS3 and buddy up with a seasoned builder. You will enjoy it soooooo much more than the way I did it. ( Yes, FEDUP... you were right ).

Just 1.5 cents

What brand of flats is Cope's selling? From what I've heard (and what I've seen), it's not worth it to get a flat unless it's an AK Builder flat. Even then, you need to have the tools to bend and finish the flat. There's spot welding involved. It's a real PITA, especially if you've never done one before. And then you still have to de-mill a parts kit and assemble it on the receiver. A whole other PITA.

And it's not really worth it to build a rifle from a flat anyway. You only want to go with a flat if you're going to build an AK pistol.

I still say MMG is the way to go. I find it a bigger FU to the idiots who drafted the law to have a fully-functional AK, even if it looks just a tad funny to some.

Building an AK isn't like building an AR, but it's not impossible.

Weezil is right - you don't build AKs to save money or because it allows more choices (like an AR). You do it for the experience.

If you want a good AK, but it.

A WASR (most of them) will need to be rebuilt or tweaked to run well. Buy something that's been built up properly already.

I am curious, how hard is it to put on a MMG yourself? I may consider that if it lowers the price a bit.

Not hard at all. Buy it, do a little trimming to get it to fit. Or buy a wood MMG. They might not be a money-saver, but 3 second mag changes are worth a few extra dollars, IMO.

Saigas are a nice alternative too. They are cheap, reliable and fairly easy to convert into an ak look a like.

Buy a Saiga and send it to fed to convert. Or just wait a little while and buy one from him

Yeah I know, the ol' alphabet soup..

Anyway as a update, I decided to go with the MMG, based on the fact that I don't plan on living in the PRK forever, and I figured it was easier to change to a pistol grip when I move out of state to make it a evil rifle again.

I keep thinking I could get one for a better price then the lancaster, I am thinking about a century arms WASR, it's $200 less then a lancaster..

So many options, so little time.

Pick up a WASR and handle it a little. Look at the fit, finish and overall quality. Now pick up the Lancaster and give the same good look. You'll know where the money went. Now pick up a Saiga and throw it into the nearest mudhole and kick it around for a bit,now run through 20 mags and throw it back in the mudhole.................I love AK's

A Saiga (especially one with a Bullet Guide installed for AK mags) can do the 3 sec mag change.

I STILL do not own any AK's or Saigas

How lame am I - dont answer that

Ive wanted to pick one up for a long while now, but I always end up buying something else. I should just pick up 2 or 3 and get it over with already

I'd recommend a WASR-10 for your first AK. It's the cheapest one out there and functions as an AK should. The wood will need to be refinished, but that's easy to do. The finish on the rifle itself may not be that goo, but come on it's an AK... LOL

My WASR-10 shoots great right out of the box after a good cleaning. It's always shot fine and shoots great at 100 yards. I have not had the pleasure yet to test it out beyond that. mine is gripless as well and my hand fits fine around the stock, but alot of people have been real happy with the MMG. I've got one on my AES-10B(RPK) and it works great on there, but I perfer my AK without one.

Buy the WASR-10 first and shoot the heck out of it and never worry about scratching it up, then save up and buy a high dollar AK to baby.... then you'll have two AK's, which is never a bad idea...LOL

+1K on that point. An AK that can't drop mags is just about useless and feels super neutered. It's the reason why I also went with a MMG on my Henderson built AK.
