I tried Aimpoint, love the small size of the T1 and H1. My astigmatism turns the dot into a small blotch. Eotechs seem a bit more crude in design and execution but the reticle is really easy to acquire. The Trijicon SRS is that company's take on the red dot - it's awesome and heavy to boot. But awesome. I also like the Burris Xtreme 1-4x24 XTR scope/red ring reticle.

I thought the Aimpoint PRO was a great deal when they hit the market at $450. At today's prices it's a killer deal!
I'm an unapologetic Aimpoint fan boy. Worth the extra cost.

Do you want a red dot sight or a scope? There are some hybrids as people have mentioned. It really comes down to how you plan to use the rifle. Red dot reticles are good for CQC for close distances and/or dim lighting. Unfortunately, they lack precision due to the size of the reticle if you are planning to shoot further. The reticles are generally about 2 MOA in size so even if you hit the red dot, there is quite a bit of margin of error at further distances. Therefore, if you want to shoot a few hundred yards, I'd stick with A2 iron sights since they are actually a bit more precise. If you want to shoot further, to 600 or 700 yards, then a scope is the way to go. For an AR-15, I'd go with the SWFA SS HD 1-6x24. This goes down to 1x and has an illuminated reticle, so it is also pretty good for shooting close and in dim lighting. The cheaper makes/models tend to be second focal plane, which I find very undesireable, or the glass isn't as good. On the other hand, to get better, you need to step up to scopes that carry a pretty hefty price tag.

Laser edged reticle gives a black sight picture so ideal for long term, batteries run out eventually.

If you have astigmatism you'll need an illuminated scope or a prism scope otherwise you won't see a dot.

My favorite red dot is the PA micro red dot. For $80 it's just as good as an Aimpoint on a range gun. You can't be it for the value. I have astigmatism and I see the dot fairly well.

Aimpoint PRO's look great on an AR. They are not expensive if you score one for $350 or so. Consider that they come with a quality mount inluded that can be adjusted to two heights with the removeable riser (comes installed flat top AR height). The self torquing thumbscrew, etc... Quick-Detach in a few twists. It is a bargain. Tough as hell, small dot, bright dot, flip caps, and battery lasts forever.

Default Favorite red dot/scope!

Aimpoints are top notch military grade but problem is if your shooting past 200 yards or need target recognition it requires a magnifier adding weight and holding over is ok but not really as effective as a BDC reticle, the ACSS is designed to give very fast upclose capabilities paired with accurate med range fire out to 600 yards! Not to mention its auto range feature, with out that all hold overs are guess work, improper ranging is the number 1 factor in shots missed further out. Its a give n take and the 2.5x is the perfect balance between speed and med range accuracy. Oh did I mention no battery is required? Thats another big factor in self defense if your battery fails unless you have cowitness back up sights you got a big problem!
The ACSS is designed to solve those problems and proven far superior in terms of weight, speed and accuracy combined to other systems.

If your looking at CQB/Med ACSS all the way!
CQB only Aimpoint/Eotec on budget PA micro.

For a range gun. The primary arms micro does very well. I have used mine on my ar, shotgun, and it is on my ak now. I have experienced some POA/POI changes on my shotgun and ak. the ak i can say is quite probably the rail system having some movement in it. shotgun had some changes when shooting lots of slugs. On the AR it did exceptional.

Otherwise it is a split decision between the Micro T1 and the XPS3. one of them will go on my carbine for good once i get cash and make a decision.

I still think the Burris is the ticket. With choices at 3X or 5X, it can be used at either close or long range. Even if the battery goes dead, the reticle still is usable.

Its reticle just lacks ranging its the #1 reason shots are missed further out. The ACSS2.5x does not need batteries has Auto Range built in,can range standing and prone targets even leading them. Still your on the right track with not needing a battery.

My $475 Aimpoint C3 is pretty good. I also love my $29 cheapo BSA reflex mini
red dot on my Daniel Defense. That works better for closer work because it has an open site view without any sight blockage like the tube style red dots. It's also very light weight. Everytime I think about getting a better replacement, I go out and shoot the crap out of targets putting that idea to rest.

If I break it, I'll buy another for $29.

There are two identical threads, with the same OP:

Any chance of merging these?

I have an Aimpoint Pro that I use and love and the battery life is great, but overall I still prefer my Eotech 512.. The reticle is fast and easy to acquire, I like the larger square sight picture, plus I can get AA batteries anywhere. The 512 gets my vote as the best RDS but Aimpoint makes amazing sights as well.

There are two things you may want to clarify. First being the "price does matter." How much of a price do you have in mind? Second is your intended usage. If it's CQB, then the Aimpoint Pro is the best. However, if your intended use is over 100 yard and if your price point is <1K, then the Acog 4x32 probably fits the bill. In fact, this is the one I'm probably gonna get when I finish my POF 415.

can i recommend all three that i have? aimpoint micro, eotech xps2-0, and trijicon 1-4x. all have distinct strengths, very few (if any) weaknesses aside from cost. really could NOT give an answer if asked which i would choose i could only have one...
