Waaaaay back in the early 90s, I was managing a gunstore and facing the the about-to-happen ban on hi-cap magazines. I already had a couple of P35s with a good stash of 13rd mags, but wanted a "modern" DA/SA pistol holding at least 15rds of 9mm. Our store was also a wholesale distributor and I was visiting one of our client gun ranges when they broke out a brand new HK USPf 9mm (the first one I had seen) to add to their rental fleet. I sampled the DA and SA trigger action and then shot the pistol on their indoor range---what an accurate and reliable pistol! I bought it right on the spot. All these years later, that pistol has NEVER failed to function---NEVER!
I then bought another dozen 15rd mags and later acquired another full-size USP 9mm to share the mags with---those two USPs are my primary home defense pistols (along with a 4" Ruger Security Six revolver, for the wife). The second USP also has not failed in any way. That's why I buy buy HKs. Recently, I've discovered smaller pistols and bought an HK P2000 9mm (DA/SA) for field carry---just more of the same boring reliability… I will probably pick-up a 9mm P2000sk in the future... |

Just sold my glock 21 .45 . Only put 100 rounds thru it, and that did it for me. Put it away and went HK.
I now own 2 hk's one usp .45 and one hk45 . So I guess I got the 2 glock to 1 hk thing backwards . |

Just had a chance to shoot my USP yesterday since it was picked up. It is way better than my glock 17 gen 3. less recoil, more accurate, smoother trigger, looks better (of course). Love it!!

Speaking of which, he also uses a teacup grip. Not sure if that means his weapon selection is valid.

I do both as well. I love Glocks but their track record just hasn't been as good with me. My first Glock was a gen 3 17 about 7 years ago. I distinctly remember taking this cheap feeling little piece of Tupperware home and comparing it with my "real" guns (which at the time were a Colt 1911, and a S&W 686). I thought perhaps I'd made a mistake in buying it. Just didn't feel solid to me and the trigger felt horrible. Later that week I made it to the range and immediately became a convert. Took some work on my part to get accurate with it being used to single actions and all but I could see what all the fuss was about.
Fast forward about 500 rounds....my slide starts locking back after each round while at the range. I finish my session holding the slide lock down with my thumb. I got home and upon detail stripping the frame, found that the spring was broken and being shortened, was somehow pushing upward against something and causing the slide to lock open each time it cycled. I replaced the part and made it about 1500 more rounds before the same thing happened again. Along the way I'd had a handful of misfeeds with different types of ammo and different magazines. I ended up getting pissed, replacing the spring again and selling the gun to a buddy that wanted it and was aware of my problems (he got it pretty cheaply). I've since owned a gen 3 19, gen 4 19/17/21/26/34/42 and have had no issues to speak of with any of them excepting the 19 gen 4. I broke the takedown bar and the slide slid forward out of battery while at the range at about 300 rounds. Replaced it with one from a gen 3 and it ran fine afterwards. The rest have all run like sewing machines through thousands of rounds. Somewhere around 5 years ago I bought a USP 45. Gun seemed great until I got to the range....it was like trying to launch lead out of a cinder block. I was accurate with it and liked the trigger but it just felt horrible to me. I was so impressed when I stripped it down and took a look at the guts that I vowed I'd sell it and wait for something more ergonomic to come out. When sse became big 3-4 years ago, I picked up a P30 9mm followed by a HK45 the next year and a 45c this year. I'm not ashamed to admit I've become a bit of a fanboy. I carry a P2000 .40 for work and more often than not, carry my 45c on my days off. All my HK's have been dead nuts reliable through thousands of rounds and simply work better for me than everything else I've shot (with the exception of high end 1911's). People make a big fuss over HK's being expensive but I'm more comfortable with them than anything else and perform better with them. I've got absolute confidence in my HK's and my ability with them. You can only die once, and in terms of expense, being injured or paying a lawyer both dwarf the cost of a gun. As does ammo cost over the years. I'm not going to sweat paying even twice the cost of a Flock, given how I feel about the weapons being turned out by HK. Last edited by Q619; 03-23-2014 at 4:59 PM.. |

Hey I have a question for all the USP owners out there: do any of you own the double action only version of the USP? If so, how do u like the trigger? I already own a DA/SA beretta and I'm in the market for a DAO pistol. The USP has me intrigued.

I bought my first USP45f back in 1996. That pistol still runs great and has over 20,000 rounds thru her (how I miss the good old days when 1,000 rounds of 45ACP ammo cost about $200 )
I've now got 3 USPs and they are the ones I'd depend on to go BANG every time.

I believe you are referring to LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) system. It is not exactly DAO. All my USP's are DA/SA system but two of my P30's are LEM. I love this trigger system. Some folks hated it. It will take a few range session to getting used to LEM trigger. You just have to try it out.

I would venture to say the HK makes the best polymers combat/defensive handguns period. Having said that, they should only be $600.00 in cost due to materials used (while still making a huge profit), but HK will continue to over charge us and we will continue to pay it.

I'd sell it for a P30 in a heartbeat.

The USP is a cool pistol, but I wouldn't buy one considering the new options HK have with the P30 and 45. I'm a big fan of the P30 and P2000. Still looking to get a P2000SK in the near future. I have a dozen 15 round mags for the P30, half still in the sealed bag.
I want to order a threaded barrel for the P30 from HK parts. Kinda make a modern MK23 pistol. |

Really depends on what you want to accomplish by doing this. USP mags are cheap. P30 mags are more expensive and I'm not sure what the availability of 10-rd mags are. Last time I checked, there was maybe a $400 price difference between a USP40 and P30 40S&W. I sold my USP40 for $700 w/ 5 mags, and fresh night sights. The cheapest I've seen a P30 was $1150.

This is Calguns. We buy new and pay tax plus SSE fees. Or buy used, which I've seen for 1150-1300. And we have to have 10rd mags.

So people in CA can buy a gen 4 Glock for under $600, but somehow the P30 is different? Maybe you are looking in the wrong shops.

Uhh, I realize you're in Virginia. But for someone with over 2k posts on Calguns, you really don't know about The Roster?

Read the post you quoted, and then check prices at some SSE shops on Gen 4 Glocks (not on roster). You can get one under $600 in CA.

Correct. But why are we talking about Glocks? Glocks are very popular and there are a couple of FFLs willing to sell Gen4s for $549 (no SSE fee) + Tax. No one is questioning that. But go research H&Ks some more and see for yourself. P30s go for about $1050 + tax + SSE fee. Since the P30 was never on roster, you will not see many for sale USED. And if you do find one used, it probably went thru SSE, in which case, the seller is going to want to recoup his money. Used USPs sell for 700-800. Do the math. I've seen the P30 new, in stock, in California with a tag of $900. YMMV.
I'd still rather get it (the P30) than a USP. But I decided on an M&P and I paid less than half that.

I never said HKs weren't popular. But they are not as popular as Glocks are here on CG, which is evident in the many posts you see in this thread. Last edited by Paperchasin; 03-23-2014 at 6:38 PM.. |

I used to live in CA, and I bought an off roster pistol when I was there. It required driving to an FFL 2 hours away, twice, but I was able to get what I wanted.
Now I travel 5 minutes down the road and leave with what I want within an hour. It used to be minutes, but I get delayed now because someone with a similar name must have gotten popped for something that would prevent them from owning firearms. That 45 min to an hour wait is a real inconvenience. lol |

Okay you win...HK P30s can be uncommonly found for $900 + Tax (I assume no SSE fee?), which is about $980 total. So back to the posters question then.....Is it worth upgrading from a USP to a P30? I guess the price difference isn't $400 like I originally posted, but instead it is $280.

Based on sales.. heck no. I could probably count on one hand how many HK handguns we sell in a week, probably don't even need any fingers some weeks. When you get into thousand dollar handguns most people start looking at 1911s and Sigs. $500 +/- handguns like Glocks, Ruger, XD, even RIAs outsell HK so much it isn't even a competition.

I need to find some of these FFLs some of you are talking about.
The cheapest I've seen P30s in my neck of the woods is $999. IIRC my P30 was $1050 plus tax and DROS.

Solid Snake? Jack Bauer?
Pfffffft. Real operators that operate in operations use Glocks.

Regardless of inflated California prices, I would say yes. For me the difference was very negligible in price, but I got a more ergonomic pistol with ambi controls. It's also very nice to carry as it's just a hair larger than a Glock 19. |
