I want to do an Appleseed but I don't want to drive more then 30 minutes to get to one.
![]() We have a couple of nice private ranges in Chico but I am not sure what the process is to get them to host an Appleseed? www.theprgclub.org http://www.chicogunclub.org/ <- Indoor range would be perfect for winter time

Surprised ranges wouldn't want Appleseeds - it gets them more prospects who become customers. I went to an Appleseed, then later began using the range that the Appleseed used since I was familiar with it - another paying customer . . . .

That makes sense then. I've only seen the local ranges here in SoCal have the partitions.

They'd also have to take over the entire range section as they run a cold range (no loaded weapons anywhere but between the red and blue lines, and all other weapons locked up in your vehicles). Like someone else said, let one of the folks in charge of AS know. Mostly they need a handful of dedicated local folks to train up to Red Hats (full instructors). The Sacramento AS last weekend had two dedicated families (husband and wife were both Red Hats, younger boys were Blue Hat (paperwork admins), another family was an Orange Hat (in-training-to-be-instructor) father and son and his Red Hat daughter, plus two other solo Red Hat instructors. Correct. And it is only twice a year. I am hoping to make it out this year with the wife, but I was also hoping to make it out the last 3 years too. ![]()

Tehama Shooters Association offers Appleseed two weekends per year. This is because their calendar is so full that they cannot fit more Appleseeds. It is a terrific facility and they are very supportive of Appleseed. But I WILL be there March 29-30 to provide the best program we can for those who are willing to get up off the couch.

The program grows when individuals attend, earn Rifleman, volunteer to become instructors and then work with their local ranges to secure Appleseed weekends on the local range calendar.
I drove 3 hours each way in 2009 (closest available) and then worked to bring Appleseed to Red Bluff and Hat Creek. Local boots on the ground with a passion for the program is the answer to your question. ps: The range in Red Bluff has covered shooting lines which helps minimize the impact of rain.

I had looked into Appleseed a few years ago after they became pretty well known since I thought it would be a good way to instruct others, but the instructor path is tedious. I'm not trying to be negative, but it does take a lot of effort, yet it's that in-depth process which gives instructors more legitimacy and training background.
That being said, I just never had the time to drive out to an Appleseed and go through a course as a student and/or one of the instructor boot camp deals. I pretty much just coach/teach informally whenever someone I meet asks me. Usually it's people who are getting into NRA/CMP High Power Service Rifle matches or are actively shooting, but are still having issues bringing their scoring averages up. I do respect what Appleseed does. It's getting people more enthusiastic about marksmanship training. Although, I wish more people are constantly participating in Appleseed events transfer that over to NRA/CMP High Power, because that sport is slowly dying, particularly in California.
