Default AAR / LMS Defense / Vehicle Defense / 12-29-13 / San Jose, CA

On 29 December 2013 LMS Defense held our Vehicle Defense course at the Metcalf Range in San Jose, CA.

WEATHER:
The weather for the training day was great. The day started out a little chilly, but slowly progressed into a perfect day for training.

GUNS/GEAR:
Glocks were the primary handgun in the class with a mixture of Springfiled XD's and 1911's. Holsters were a variety of kydex along with two Serpa holsters. Most students carried exposed though there were a few that trained from concealed. Student experience varied from Law Enforcement and private firearm instructors to citizens with and without CCW's.

OVERVIEW:
With most of us spending a large portion of our lives in and around vehicles the LMS Defense Vehicle Defense course was designed for armed civilians and law enforcement officers to learn and implement tactics for shooting from inside and in close proximity to vehicles. After completing our admin, safety and medical briefs we moved to the range for some flat range drills which started out with the LMS Defense Benchmark drill. This drill opened some eyes and showed students when that first round leaves the barrel, it has to be your best from the start. After the Bench Mark Drill, we moved into positional shooting which was taught and then practiced at length.

The group then moved to our range vehicle for an in depth discussion about vehicle design and hard points for cover from both within the vehicle and while working outside the vehicle.

Students made several dry runs in the vehicle working on their draw stroke and removing the seat belt. After getting the movements down and smoothing the out their draw strokes, students engaged steel from a contact front, left, right and rear from inside of the vehicle. Once competency was demonstrated moving from the vehicle was taught and students began working from inside the vehicle to a position of cover outside. We then moved to multiple person scenarios working with a shooting partner where students learned the importance of communication. During this exercise, we had one student who demonstrated the importance of keeping your finger off the trigger with his weapon pointed in a safe direction as he fell to the ground while running to a different point of cover.

As usual, Metcalf Range was an excellent training venue. The staff is always courteous and make each visit a smooth and successful one.

I would also like to thank the following companies for their support of LMS Defense and our students.

Thanks for a great class! I had a great time and the weather was wonderful. Here's a pic of my 'graceful' tumble. Or as I'd like to phrase it: Tactically testing the coefficient of friction boundaries of the loose aggregation of stones while aggressively charging from one position of cover to another.
