Default Private shooting range

Can I convert a horse barn into a shooting range on my property? We're in the market for a house, and one of the houses we saw has a really big horse barn. I was thinking if we decide to buy that house, I would turn that into a semi-enclosed shooting range.

Anyone has any thought on this? Where would I go for the permit, county or the Sheriff's? Btw, the property locates in La Cresta in West Murrieta.

Thanks

Ask the local police and you will get a "negative answer" and the city planners will give you a $1million planning blueprint bill 1st...

Good luck with your endeavor.

I've been told I was born in a barn. I wonder what that means ?

If you are within 150 yards of an occupied dwelling that is not your dwelling you will need a permit. Or written permission of owner of said dwelling. Also local laws may mean no discharge without permit.

My parents used to own a house in La Cresta. From what I recall, per H.O.A. CC&R's, no discharge of firearms are allowed with-in La Cresta. I too heard of a home that had a "basement" range. It wouldn't hurt for you to look into it more though.

From what I understand, HOA has jurisdiction on architecture of the house and all the relevant things that go with it. It doesn't have any saying in terms of firearms. I own a vacant parcel up there too.

I tend to agree with the fact that if you make the barn sound-proof, you may be able to turn it into a shooting range. Some of the houses up there are so far apart, a discharge probably won't make anyone notice. If I'm really serious about this house that we're currently looking, I'll check with the cops prior to buying.

Would love to see that. You don't happen to know how much does it take to build that, do you? I think it would be awesome if someone is buying a house and see that it includes an underground shooting range, whether that person likes guns or not. It just a wow factor and a sign of high end features, much like a bowling alley.
