Default Squirrel Hunting

I'm working on obtaining my hunting license for the first time I gotta take the hunter safety class first.

Does anyone know of the closest public lands where we can go squirrel hunting? We are in the Newport/Mesa area. I understand they are in season and we shouldn't eat them because of disease.

I welcome any tips or suggestions on this subject as well. TIA

Johnnie

Johnnie
Tree squirrels are safe. It's the ground squirrels that you want to avoid.

They're all ground squirrels in socal unless you're up in the high elevations among conifers. Check out Cleveland NF from Temecula to east of San Diego for ground squirrels. And don't pick them up. They're full of fleas.

Yeah the fleas carry bubonic plague so I'm not planning to touch them. Hunter safety class is next weekend!

What I'm trying to find out now is where we can go park and hike out into public lands and take out some varmints!
