Depends on what you mean by price? As in whats the range? You could go savage for around $1300 or sky's the limit with AI stuff? So how much you looking to spend?

I have the Savage 110 BA with the barret m98b butt pad. Oh yeah the butt pad makes a HUGE difference. It wasn't to hard to modify the barrett butt pad to fit my Savage either. Oh yeah and depending how far you want to shoot yo u need to take in account the barrel twist rate.

A lot of money, but DTA SRS A1 or Covert if you want to keep it really compact.

Armalite 338 lm bolt gun is said to be gtg, Savage 110 is another, you can pick these up for under 3k.

Sako trg is a very good one, for around 3k. Accuracy international is one of the best, but cost is 5-6k.

Pick you'r poison. . .

Most .338LMs are bolt guns, but since you are asking the semiautomatic forum, I'd go with the Noreen Bad News. I have no first hand experience of the gun, but it looks fun.

http://onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp

ETA: Other than that, most people will advise you to the rifle that best doubles as a boat paddle.

Why the hell is price an object for a rifle that shoots .338? The money is in the ammo, spend more for a good gun.

A bolt action .338 seems excessive. At max range, you have 6 seconds or so to load the next round, make adjustments, drink some coffee, etc....
With that said, I hear a lot of great things from the savage 110

It's kind of hard to go low budget on a rifle that's chambered in $5 bills

You're better of with a $400 .308 unless you plan on taking out taliban from 2000 yards away haha

The best FOR THE MONEY? That's easy. Savage. And not the BA, the $1000 version. I sold my 338 for $1100 or so, including brass, reloading dies, 200 bullet tips or so, MTM case, blah, blah, blah. That thing shot proper boxes, stacked holes, etc just fine. I'm sure it would have done OK when shooting for groups at real distances.

I put a vortex viper PST scope on it @ $600 and it was a FANTASTIC scope for the money. For $2000 I had a fully built, fully optioned, and fully accessorized 338 lapua rifle that had low weight and excellent accuracy. No goofing with it needed like the bolt rifle I replaced it with.

OP, you DO NOT have to buy the top end of the market for get a 338 lapua that can shoot the wings off flies. You really do not.

ammo costs? for me:

Brass: $1.30 a piece. Never failed, but let's say I would have gotten 5 reloads out of it (no way, would have done better). That's 26 cents a shot.
Bullet: $22 for 50 rounds, plus shipping. If I disregard shipping, that's 44 cents.
Powder: 83 grains. if I pay $40 per pound (ripoff!), that's 47 cents of powder.
Primer: $40 per 1000 (retail), 4 cents a pop.

One round, $1.22, including brass, and the bullet is lead free.
5 rnds $6.10
10 rnds $12.20
40 rnds $48.80

Plus the cost to ship the box of bullets, of course. And if you pay real prices for consumables (rather than retail) the price goes down even more.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND, if you don't reload, you can get prvi partisan for $50 per 20 rnds. It's like a 338 RUM rather than lapua, but that's still $2.50 a pop, not $5. it shoots fine too.

That costume would look great at the range when shooting a TRG-42.

I can get off 4 rounds in 10 seconds without much trouble from a bolt action rifle.
What are you doing that takes 6 seconds per shot?

I'm pretty sure cabinetguy meant to say a semiautomatic .338 seems excessive. Otherwise you and he are making the same point.

Think he meant it's 6 seconds to POI, and meant to say semi-auto. IE why do you need to get rapid shots downrange if the ranges this round excel at take so long to hit the target before you know what needs adjusting.

the answer is "for fun, after the adjustments are made"

I haven't heard great things about Noreen's other rifles though, enough to steer me away from any of their products, truth be told. The Badnews might be bad news.

Folks need to get with the program. With the overall shortage of .22lr, .338 is the new .308, .308 is the new .223, and .223 is the new .22lr.
