Default Drill canceled this weekend.

It was our bi-annual APFT month as well. Many a happy fat soldiers are out there. They have one more month.

However, with me being on training orders this month none of them are getting processed for payment. If I lived month to month I would be totally screwed.

Thank god I'm deploying before I will run out of money.

They cancelled ours a week out, but they've rearranged the drill calendar to compensate. A MUTA 8 in January? Dafuq?

You have to make up the days in order to balance out your SGLI payment and to also have a good year. Even if you don't have a drill you will get charged the $29 for your SGLI coverage this month so be prepared for that to come out of your pay.

I haven't known anyone that lives only on their drill pay but a lot or Reservists that I have known use the pay to greatly supplement their income. I also know some that use their drill pay just to pay for the gas to get to and from drill since they have to drive a long distance. Several drill to pay for the Tricare Reserve Select health insurance that they are probably going to lose now thanks to the "Affordable" Care Act.

Now that will make your employer happy. 4 days of training all at once?
I got out many years ago, but for those readers that don't know what a Muta is, one day at drill is a muta 2 or 2days pay. muta 4 is a 2 day drill and 4 days pay. If my memory is foggy on this NG or Reserve guys, fix me.

There are 2 MUTA's a day for a total of 4 for a regular weekend. You get a total of 4 days worth of pay for a 2 day drill. On the flip side, at least in the reserves, you can get a "U" for missing each MUTA so if you blow off an entire weekend you can get 4 U's and be half way to getting kicked out for unsatisfactory participation.

This was one of many reasons why my Reserve time felt like a waste. My civie job was too demanding and based on project cycles, so any deviation from long planned ahead drill dates put my job in jeopardy. It also made it nearly impossible to take advantage of opportunities that popped up from time to time. And as a senior NCO it means you need to be out there Friday night as well, through 3 hours of traffic. Sucktacular. Over the years I came to the conclusion that having a government job at the Post Office, Fire Department or Law Enforcement, was the best situation. Those guys scooped up all the school slots, never had a problem with making drill weekends or going TDY. I quickly determined the best time to be in the Reserves was when you were away on Active Duty.

Have your CoC put you on as many orders as they can and all the classes. At which point you might as well be active, or be multi mosq and find an agr job.
