If you took your old notebook, installed Pear Linux on it, you'd have a Mac-like Interface, at ZERO-price, but WAY more stable than Windows.

If you NEED Windows, and have to get one with Win8, then at least TRY Linux on the old rig (Pear seems to work with more hardware than *buntu does).
Pear has the 24 spot on distro watch. have some quinces man. Recommend to a new user something like ubuntu, debian or cent/sl linux, not an obscure spin off from ubuntu.

A lenovo y400 would fit the bill perfectly. You can even run 2 dedicated graphics card in it, but you can play pc games on just one.

ive had my hp pavillion dv6 for two years now it has been a great pc. 8 gigs ram, 570 gig HD quad core processor. 15 inch screen. it was $560 or something when i bought it, you could probably get it quite a bit less now. or the new version of it.

Talking My 2

Mac for porn. PC for games. Anything else use the computer lab...that's where the girls are at.
Find someone you trust to fix your computer, new battery whatever.
Forget about screen size and buy a portable projector (1080i/p), someone always wants you around to use that.
You can also find someone selling a game console cheap. 90inch screen and an entertainment system!
Keep'em playa.
p.s. People still play CS

Sadly I am still looking...

I really wanted to pick something up on black friday but it looks like I missed out on some deals. I actually was at Best Buy then Walmart and Target Thanksgiving night and early Friday morning but didn't see anything good. Looks like Fry's had a decent deal on an Asus 15.6" i3 with 4gb RAM and 320gb HDD for $279. There also was a Dell deal online for a 15" touchscreen i5 6gb ram and 500gb hdd with a 32gb SDD for $399 that I missed out on

Anyone see anything good for cyber Monday worth getting?

reading this thread on a Lenovo T420s and no problems.

I agree with some of the others Thinkpad X and T series are good machines.

If you have a knowledgeable friend and don't mind used you can get some good deals. I haven't ever bought a new laptop for myself.

- I mainly using it for Youtubing, web browsing, Microsoft Office applications.
If that's all you're going to use it for, consider a Chromebook. It will do exactly what you're asking, for 1/2 of your budget:

-6 1/2 hour battery life
-virus proof (no need for anti-virus software ever)
-incredibly light, only 2.3 lb
-boots up in 10 seconds
-unlimited storing capacity (cloud)
-word processing with Google Docs - compatible with MS Office suite

All this for $249.
