Default Tactical Shooting

Update: Date set for Steele Peak - Sat. 9.14.13 0800.

Everyone invited. All skillset welcome. Let's pool our knowledge together. Bring your sling/holster and target stands. More than welcome to use .22lr.

Bring trash bags too - for the clean up around the spot.

Looking to join up with anyone or group doing tactical shooting/drills in LA/OC.

I have SOME training in fire/maneuver, small unit, CQB from buddies that served in A-stan/Iraq. Just looking to get more trigger time. Not interested in attending carbine/pistol classes. Want something informal and cheap.

Likewise I would be happy to link up with anyone without any experience.

LOL - I think we would have to play airsoft to do MOUT. We can replicate a room with card board and caution tape. Makes a nice room clearing drill.

Well can't get a private range at Burro until Nov. Anybody has one reserved?

Or we can try Steele Peak on 9/14 Sat. Been there once and maybe there's a flat spot just like by the entrance to this BLM spot.

I doubt I can make this trip specifically (I am on a trip that weekend). I am very much a newb to tactical shooting but would absolutely be down for this.

Sad Guy, if you have any plans to do this again I would love to know and will do my best to make it.

Anyone bringing steel? I only have one spinner for pistol rounds and its a tiny little thing, 3 inches and 5 inches in diameter. I can stick with a pistol caliber AR build if no one else has targets rated for .223/.308

Sounds fun, fellas. Safety always, especially when it comes to fire and maneuver with complete strangers.

THIS!! I'd guess that only one person runs and shoots at any given time and we'd set things up so no one is in any position to sweep anyone else with their weapon. That and jst getting out to a place where we can all practice our 4 count draws and rapid fire stuff without getting yelled at by a rangemaster.

I'm looking at scrounging together the scrap metal to make a few gongs or even a set of falling plates or dueling tree but I can't get AR500 on a timely basis and cut and weld and anneal and treat it so I'd be looking at showing up with non-rifle rated targets made out of mild scrap steel. It'd be pistol caliber only for me. I have enough steel sitting in my yard right nowto make all but a few critical sections.

Planning to start shooting at IDPA and other similar events. Would like to have some tips.

Might take a relative along who was in the military. I'm tentative so far.
But will keep an eye on this thread.

Let me know what you guys plan to do and bring

You guys know that Raahauges in Norco allows private bay rentals too, right? $30/2 hours. Save some gas from hitting up BLM.

Raahauges will do next time. I don't think we can reserve a range on 9/14. If anybody want to try, go for it and we can move the location.

Can anybody bring EZ Ups? Also need some large cardboard (like the ones your flat screen tv came in. Working on the evo line up and getting us much prop.

Chapparal - thanks for making some targets. Much appreciated.

^ Will be picking up two six inch gongs, two eight inchers and two ten inchers from SoCalTargetWorks. They're 3/8" ar500. Got the chain and bolts at home to mount them.

Mild steel would present a safety hazard to us when (not if) it cratered. We can at least position the different gongs to make things challenging.

Frames are gonna be scrap 2x4 and some rusty old sawhorse brackets.

Awesome Chaparral. That just elevate the fun quotient. I will bring fire extinguisher as well. It is dry season.

Guys, working on a training evolution. Will do basic stuff first but leaning into practical tactical drills.

One of three steel targets provided by Chaparral. Many thanks. Just an awesome experience to go with our shoot N move drills.

AR500 - I will take up your offer. Can't go back to paper when you've tried steel.

Man. I so missed out on this! I have some IDPA style target stands. Maybe next time I'm able to join I can bring them. But nothing beats steel though.
I'll keep this thread tagged for a Raahauges.

Keep shooting and honing those skills!

I'd be more interested in quality than price. The plates we had didn't stand up well at all to 5.56 at 83 yards. I had a rangefinder and the far plates were 83 and the close plates were 27-30 yards depending on where we stood. The 10 inch plate actually bent into a bowl shape from all the impacts. I'm going to get my Rockwell hardness tester out of storage and run some tests on these plates. Something doesn't add up.

It sure was fun ringing that 10 incher at 83 yards with an STI 2011 in .40 tho Everyone who showed up was safe. I don't thing anyone got sweeped with anyone elses muzzle and everything was safely pointed downrange everytime I looked.

not all ar500 is equal you can get the chinese stuff that comes in at around 400 on the brinel test or you can get quality if you look at any of our reviews on our facebook or anyplace else we only use ar500 that comes in at no less than 485 a perfect example of this is a vendor on here last year posted some ar500 at a discounted price because it was below standard also some vendors say that they use a laser and that is the best was we disagree we cut plasma but in a submerged water table not just a water table what this meens is that the material is actually under water when being cut so in other words be carefull just because its ar500 it not all the same

Yep. Got the same laser story. I'm pretty sure I got sold AR400. Will be welding over dimples, quenching and griding and just use those for pistols calibers only.

I will probably be contacting you or someone with the real goods that can handle whatever .223 to .308 we can throw at them. San Dimas is close enough to me I can pick them up will call.
