I bought an 1858 remmington (Pietta), some substitute bp, and a butt load of caps...but I have no balls (ha ha!) I have a mold for round balls and some lead, but haven't cast any. Also, my indoor ranges don't allow BP. So I bought the Kirst convertor, but have yet to shoot that too (For the price, of the gun and the converter...just go buy a Ruger or something!)

I have yet to enjoy this fine pistol!

All info is good info and it is important that we share and spread our knowledge. Never, ever, a bad thing in my book. I enjoyed the threadjack.

We'll take your word for it! Judging by your back, it looks like it went okay.

Tom-ADC's photo makes the point far better than my words could, that much is certain. Also, I forgot that Pietta sometimes makes cool, if not historically accurate, versions of the old cap and ball sixguns.

Well i finally got out to the range today and had ignition problems. One shot, everything else failed with the 777. Taking apart the pistol to examine for clogs and such (there shouldn't have been as I cleaned it before taking it to the range).

Need more caps now.. and no one has them. Does Dick's still carry them?

Did you cap the nipples with the chambers empty and fire first? Sometimes after cleaning, oil gets into and clogs the nipples and this can prevent the caps from igniting the powder charge. So a lot of guys start the day by firing just caps and no powder/no ball to clear the passage, then load normally.

Another possibility is loose fitting caps that either weren't fully seated or loosened under recoil. Best of luck.

That's what I did. 6 caps, 6 pops. Then 30 grains of FFFg and a ball in each hole, ran flawlessly.

I did have one slight problem with the ram rod not lining up just right. It wouldn't seat the ball because it hit the cylinder. Had to hold it "just right" and in she went.

It may have been my caps, I had a few left and tried them on unloaded cylinders today. They did not give a strong "pop". Fully seated.. hmm. Contaminated maybe?

#10, old ones. I found them in my reloading equipment in a plastic bag. They are pretty damn old regardless.

If only there were caps available these days.

Ok, also decided to test out some of the 777. Was surprisingly difficult to lite the powder with an open flame. Is this normal for this powder?

For the record, put a 30 grain charge on a stone slab and used a lit taper. It took about 10 count to ignite the powder. I know 777 is higher temp but that was somewhat absurd.

That IS absurd. My grandfather gave us a jar of triple 7 a year or two ago and we used it (I know, I know, a waste) to light camp fires. It lit within 2 second of a flame touching it, at most. 10 seconds? That's crazy.

I have never heard of that, that is really freaking weird.
Is there moisture in the powder or is it stored around a lot of moisture? That is the ONLY thing that makes sense to me.

I've only seen 209 rifle primers at Dicks. But I do hear the plastic cap gun caps work.... really.

That said; did you dry fire some caps before trying to shoot? The manual recommends it to burn off extra oil in the cylinders.

If it is not raining I'm going to angeles range tomorrow. I'm usually over on the right side. Have a guitar gun case. I'll give you some caps to try out your gun but I only have 40 or 50 total (I might also be checking a toy store). I have more on the way but probably won't get them until next week. I also have some non triple 7 if you wanted to try another powder.

PS
if your using size 11 you have to pinch them a bit before putting them on. Otherwise weird if not 'bad' stuff happens.

I've heard some of the substitute powders are harder to ignite than the real stuff but did not realize it was that bad! Since it is available locally, I only use the real stuff.

Maybe when supply gets better, you can try magnum percussion caps?

I am just shy of about 10 hours north of ya :\

The plastic capgun caps only work on real BP, the heat on the subs is just too much.

Odd. I haven't had any ignition issues to speak of using 777. I also have old caps. Occasionally, a cap will fail on the first whack, but usually goes on the 2nd. I have never had the powder fail to ignite when the cap goes "bang".

I have some extra caps you can have. They are fairly old, but still sealed.

Sounds like something's up with the powder. I like using Pyrodex, have you any of that to try?

Dude, I'd love too but I cannot drive long distances any more. Only way I can make it out to the pits is if the wife is driving.

Which bites.
