Default Is the registered AW list public?

Hi folks,
Under the proposed SB 374 law, if a gun owner lawfully registers their centerfire does their registration become available to anyone seeking the list?
Reason I ask is that I was hearing on NPR that New York State gun owners fear that their names may become public after registration and they are then targets for criminals wanting to steal guns, extreme left wing activists, etc.
The same thing is likely in CA if that list is accessible to anyone.

It would make absolutely no sense to make the names/addresses public, so I'd be willing to bet that's just what CA is planning to do.

Agreed. The DOJ (and every other gun-grabber) knows darn well they cannot get all the semi-auto sporting rifles from their lawful owners, so they will let all the low life, tweeker, gang banging, scum bag thieves know what you have & where you live.

currently, the AW lists are private. they can't even confirm an AW registration over the police radio and must do it through the MDT.

We're probably safe as long as the list contains names that the Gun Prohibitionists don't want to make public.

Until Anonymous hacks the DOJ and publishes the list, or the next Snowden does a data dump to Wikileaks. But no one will really care, after all, it was for the children.

If the list does get published (assuming I'm on it in the first place) you can bet I'll have a loaded gun at the ready at all times. If someone wants what I have, they'd better be willing to lose their life.

You don't already keep one at the ready?

it will be either an "accidental disclosure" by some incompetent government worker as what they have done with military records,

or after another coward psycho mass shooting, there will be public outcry to make the list available for public safety reasons, i.e. neighbors want to know what's being kept next door....

They should make all Assault Weapon owners wear an identifying mark on their clothing, so police officers can keep an eye on them. Something like a patch, maybe. And in a nice bright reflective color, like yellow. And it should be a simple, easily-spotted shape... maybe a star of some sort?

Just throwing ideas out there.

And we don't think/believe NSA hasn't already hacked existing registration lists and has them readily available?

I bet even with the latest revelations we have only heard about a very small percentage of the data NSA has uncovered and stored in its master computer center.

Yes and no.

No 'external' person besides LE/DA investigation will get "personally-identifying information" saying Joe Blow owns a Colt MT6940 serial #JH12345.

Getting a database of CA RAW make/model/etc list and perhaps other gun details [but not personal details] would however be a reasonable request and has happened in past. Nobody could figure out who-owns-what from this list, but one migh get an idea of # of Armalites vs Bushmasters etc. - however, given DOJ AW registry has used NCIC substitutions there is total confusion on foreign guns esp AKs - plus factor in data entry quality issues into the bix. [My above example on Armalite vs Bushmaster was intentionally specific - I'd bet a ton of ARs are misregistered as Colt just because it was an AR and the registrant thought it was a Colt derivative, etc.]

CA law in essence even specifies that personal AW reg info cannot be read out on the radio en clair - though I'd bet this may be violated in some circumstances - though I'd bet getting gun details is better over MDT (supposedly somewhat secure).
