Default When Does the Penal Code Get Updated?

it's hard enough keeping up with new laws, but not too long ago I was re-reading the penal code and last year's changes weren't even on there.

How are we supposed to make sure we're following laws if they're not even on the books yet? Sure, they're in force, just no way to know it.

Ok, we can read about them on Calguns, but there ought to be an official state source for these changes.

El Chivo,

What source are you getting your Penal Code information from? A lot of private sources may not be timely in updating their materials.

The Penal Code (and the other state codes) are kinda like living documents. They're subject to change at any time. Nearly all laws that are passed during a legislative session become effective on January 1st of the following year. That's when nearly all changes become effective in the code. Printed copies of the code are generally revised after January 1 of each year. However, a particular law may set a different date for it to become effective. Laws can also contain an "emergency" clause making them effective upon the governor's signature.

Here is a like to the State of California's library of codes:

Also, at some point the AG's web site will post a list of changes to the 'Dangerous Weapons Control Laws', though they seem to have sometimes been a bit casual about that in recent years.

Latest summary is http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/ag...f/cfl2013.pdf?

El Chivo,

Thanks. That's a California state-maintained site. I 've used it for a long time now and haven't found too many errors.

What sections have you found it outdated on?

I was checking the Long Arm Open Carry changes, (Portantino?), this was a few months ago, but it was after it passed. I'll have to check again and see if the updates have been made.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html is the older site, and seems not to be getting updated on the same schedule as http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml; OTOH, as already noted, things that become law on Jan 1 of the next closest year (known in October, after the date the Governor must veto or the bill becomes law anyway) usually will not get updated until approximately October/November.

Things that are passed in a session, but have a further out implementation date, often appear twice - once with the 'as it is now' and once 'as it will be on the date'. After the effective date, the older versions are deleted.

The open carry changes appear on the new site, if understand correctly what you're looking for:

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...ctionNum=26400.

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...01120120AB1527

.
