Default Raahauge's Steel Challenge Cancelled.

Just got a call from a friend that was planning on going to Steel Challenge with me on Sunday, 08/11/2013, at Raahauge's Shooting Enterprise.

Seems like it is unfortunately cancelled. Checked the range website and seems like it is not longer on the calender for the future Steel Challenges too...

I know, I guess it's not updated. I checked that website and the website for Raahauge's right after I got the call. I got the call when I was at work so it had to be brief, but it was not indicated that my friend wasn't going, it was more like the Steel Challenge was cancelled.

My friend goes to Raahauge's frequently for matches and other shooting events, I believe, was contacted by Hawk Taylor or someone that organizes the events and was told it was cancelled. I tried to confirm again by calling after work, but is currently unreachable. I will attempt to give you an update tomorrow as I am going to contact my friend.

I am truly bummed out about this, I schedule myself off this weekend from work to go to this event...

That's odd, I hope Hawk is ok. You can always shoot Norco Running Gun USPSA today.

The shotgun forum has a post saying the whole range was shut down yesterday for "police activity". May be related.

Saw Hawk today. Steel challenge is over for good at Raahauhe's. He is no longer working there, moving to Vegas.

Are Steel Challenge and Ron's Steel Madness the same thing at Norco?

Steel Challenge (at norco) and Steel madness are separate matches on separate weekends. Though Ron Jung too has threatened to move his operation to Vegas before. Are things so bad even our matches are moving out of state?

It's not the customers. It's the politics and overall hassle. It's just easier to run a match elsewhere and you get better terms with the range. There has been some talk about maybe we have too many matches in So Cal and the recent ammo crunch really made things difficult for some. I just hope the really good match directors, and stage setters stick it out because we shooters need you.

Awh, no! I've only shot at Raahague's a handful of times and have met him once and thought he was great. Was hoping to see him next week and at a future LUHT event.

That's what happens when you have your felon son working near guns (from what I've been told). You get the Po-Po come pay a visit.

Screw Hawk. Good riddance. He kicked my buddy out of Running Gun for no good reason other than he's unstable.

He's gone my buddy is back doing what he loves.

So, what's the deal with Raahaughies - are they back open or not. Website said the bays were closed for cleaning or whatever since June.

Anyone have info on that?

It was definitely for the money.

With the bad economy, he closed his other business. He was trying everything possible to be successful at running the matches. I worked closely with him for a couple years. I don't recall him having something else to fall back on. But I wasn't really into his personal life.

Raahauges took a decent cut from the match fee of each shooter. I wouldn't want to try to do Ron's job, especially for the money he seemed to have to work with.

There seemed to be some BS between people on that range. There was always drama. Hawk always respected me, so I thought he was a decent guy. The few matches I shot with him were good. Others hated Hawk.

Johnny was a total ******* and was threatening toward my family for picking up brass that was left from club shooters, which belonged to the club until we were done with the berms and had a chance to clean up what was left behind. He claimed that his only pay for working there was getting to keep and sell the brass. He could have handled his problems differently.

Ron's matches were very fun to average depending on what was setup. His group lacked organization and it also relied heavily on volunteers. What was said and what happened were not always the same. I can't stand BS'ers. I helped out with the club and bought into the whole club atmosphere type thing, but Ron was always about getting all he could out of a person for as little as possible. Others have said they helped out but eventually just felt like they were used. Some of the people who helped out, made a real effort, but some of them were just as unorganized and slow as Ron. Shooters expect the match to be ready when they get there, especially for $35. I know the range hasn't always been easy to work with, for Ron as well. That range and it's matches just seemed chaotic.

It is unfortunate for the Raahauges range to have difficulties, but for some people (my family included) the range just seemed to lack what we were after.

I shot a couple matches at WEGC last fall. They only charge $20 for public match shooters and $10 for full members. They are a night and day difference from Raahauges. The matches are run smoothly and they act like pros. There is a set meet time so you don't have late squads, and the squads help tear down. The range employees have been very welcoming. I am a full member, so I get to use the range for many types of shooting at any time of the day or week.

I know that WEGC is different because it is private and supported by members, but it is a better example of how to run a range. I thought about shooting at Raahauges again, but it just isn't worth all the drawbacks. The only reason to go back would be for some of the less usual stages that Ron had. His match was fun, but not all he cracked it up to be. Raahauges also doesn't have 3 gun competitions and they didn't have a 250+ yard range for 3 gun and plinking. WEGC goes out to 600 yards. I pay a yearly membership and then plink at wegc for free. Any time, as often as I want, private bays, rifle range, shotgun, they have it.

I didn't come here to bash Raahauges, but to give a little insight from someone who shot pretty often for a few years there and helped out. I am not surprised to hear the possibility of groups leaving the range, whatever the reason. Even though I don't plan to go there again, I hope they stay open and provide a place for shooters to have fun. I hope they improve their game and make me want to shoot there again.

I've always enjoyed shooting there. Hawk will be missed, if he really is gone. He was always helpful and professional with my son and I when we visited. I don't shoot the matches so I can't speak to that.

I don't see how it can be for the money you're charging 50 people $35.00 twice a month before expenses

According to Ron, it was for the love of the sport, when he started. A group of shooters that he shot with decided to start their own club. He mentioned that much, but I don't remember all the details. He had other income at the time.

As we all know, crap happens. Even though it probably wasn't planned, I think he relies on some of that money for income. Young people have a hard time finding work right now. I don't think it would be easy for him to find other work right now. I know the match fees that he collects don't add up to all that much. He relies on sports fair to help cover the match expenses, at least that is what he has said in the past.

There is no way I would want to take on Ron's responsibility. That is a hard job. He should get some money in his pocket for all his time and money invested into the club.

Now I could be wrong. He may be well off and not need money from the club. I formed MY OPINION based on what I have seen and heard.

I wouldn't blame a match director for considering a move to a more gun and business friendly state, especially if there is drama going on at the current range.

It will be interesting to see what plays out at that range. I haven't heard anything about it other than what has been posted by others here.

How could that happen? Hawk has nothing to do with the Norco Running Gun USPSA match, unless he observed your buddy doing something unsafe with a weapon.

Raahauges charges the event (Ron, Hawk, Jimmy) $20 per head. It went up recently to $23/ head. That means the gross is only $15 per shooter for Ron.

Yes that $23 also does not cover trash, porta-potties and other range expenses. Add on there an insurance policy and you better be doing it for the love of the sport.

It is true you can get better terms at another range. Many of the match directors have shopped around. Some like LESA have left, others have stayed because of Raahagues favorable centralized location.

Speaking in all honesty, if I owned a range, it would be more profitable for me to rent out those bays to the public, given those numbers.

Curious about how you came to that conclusion. Here are my assumptions:

On Saturday, let's say NRG gets an average roster of 100 shooters.

100 x 23 = $2,300

That's for six bays over 6-ish hours. If these were rented to the public at $30/ for two hours, then they'd get:

36/2 x 30 = $540. Of course, that's assuming one shooter per bay. To exceed the match revenue, there would have to be at least five public shooters per bay.

Based on my assumptions, looks like Raahauges is better off with the match each Sat, especially since it's almost gauranteed, whereas very few of the public would be coming out at 8am. I could be wrong so looking forward to your thoughts here.

Got it! My daughter does the scores for Ron and we see the roster. Numbers used to be 60-80 shooters a few years ago. Lately turnout has been as low as the thirties!! I think the average this year has been in the fifties which is a shame.

Hawk kicked him out of range during a match thus he could never shoot NRG again. Once Hawk was gone from the picture the match director called him to come back and shoot at the last match. If he were unsafe that would have never happened.

It was a misunderstanding that is too long for me to post details here also since its been awhile since I heard the story I don't recall much of it anyhow. My buddy has mentored several of the younger newer shooters at NRG and when they heard he was no longer able to shoot they were ticked.

Shot at Ron's Steel Madness at Raahaugees. The atmosphere seemed better just like the old times. No one in a golf cart roaming rushing for stages to broken down so 2 people can shoot in the berm. Good times.
