Default RECCE/ Recon Rifle Photo Thread

I know we already have a photo thread dedicated to the MK-12 SPR and similar rifles, but I dodn't think we have one dedicated to their smaller, lighter predecessor, the mythical RECCE/ SEAL Recon Rifle. Since liitle is known about these rifles that were developed at individual units by SEAL Team armorers, there really isn't a rigid set of specs available for these like there are for the MK 12 Mod 0 and Mod 1 rifles that were made at Crane later. For the purposes of this thread, the term RECCE or Recon Rifle applies to any lightweight precision carbines that have the following features:

- 16" medium contour barrel with mid length gas system

- Rifle length forend, either quad rail or modular with top rail.

- Flat Top upper receiver equipped with magnified optics

- Bipod equipped

Bonus Points for rifles using Mil Spec hardware/furniture or having muzzle devices set up for using a can.

Extra Bonus Points for ratty and beaten looking Krylon paint jobs.

My contribution:

Top Rifle:

Upper-
Saber Defense 16" Mid Length fluted stainless barrel
UTG Pro Rifle Length quad rail (USA Made) w/ Troy rail covers.
Smith Enterprises Vortex flash hider with external threads for Ops Inc.
Spikes Tactical alignment collar.
Caldwell 6-9" Pivot model bipod
Standard flat top upper with M4 feed ramps
Generic AR-15 BCG that originally came with the upper from PK Firearms.
Standard charging handle with extended latch.
Sightmark 2.5-10X32 Mil Dot scope
Scope mount of suspicious origin. Got it in a pile of parts traded years ago. Pretty sure it's a knockoff and have since replaced it with an ADM Recon mount.

Lower-
Stag lower with stainless LPK (Forgot brand name) Trigger worked over for better pull, faster locktime.
Mil Spec buffer tube/spring with Spikes Tactical heavy buffer.
Airsoft knockoff SPR grip (Only way to get one molded in FDE)
Magpul ACS stock with battery tubes removed.

Coated in Burnt Bronze Cerakote. In a toaster oven.

Bottom Rifle:

Upper-

Spikes Tactical flat top upper with M4 feed ramps.
Rainier Arms "Select" 16" mid length barrel.
Paladin Machine 3 position gas block
Midwest Industries "SS" rifle length forend
Caldwell 6-9" bipod (Non-pivot ordered on accident....)
R-Guns NiB M-16 Bolt Carrier Group.
BCM Gunfighter charging handle (Mod 3)
Matech BUIS with unknown front folding sight. (Parts bin....)
Burris PEPR scope mount.
Leatherwood 1-4X24 CMR scope.

Lower-

Spikes Tactical lower with DPMS LPK (Trigger worked over)
Magpul MOE grip.
Mil Spec buffer tube/spring with heavy 9mm buffer.
Magpul ACS stock with battery tubes removed.

Painted with Desert Mirage Brown Duracoat.

good stuff, didnt know the RECCE came before the SPR.
I always figured a SEAL one day decided he wanted a more compact / lighter SPR...

and if any of your rifles are Krylon'd they must be very freshly painted! (ooops, just saw its cera and dura ! )

The timeline for these rifles is pretty confusing. From what I've read it seems that the RECCE/Recon concept rifles were developed by unit armorers. They took the concept to Crane for production, where it became the SPR program. At some point it seems that some of the SEAL Teams were not happy with Cranes interpretation of the concept and had them converted back into 16" uppers. This may have been done by PRI, which would explain why they had a batch of the original take-off Mod 0 uppers up for sale years ago. I've seen pictures in the huge MK 12 thread on AR15.com of what I assume are these rifles reconfigured to 16" by PRI, they had the newer gen III free float tube with a partial top rail and rail mounted flip up sights. PRI sells an upper very similar to these called the MK 12 Mod 0 Variant:

http://www.precisionreflex.com/Detai...56083&CAT=4824

ETA: This is the only photo I can find now of the newer RECCE rifles with the Gen III forend. The original pic is gone, this is just the thumbnail from google:

Hell yeah it counts, that's a great looking setup Guess we'll have to open this up to 14.5" models as well, provided that they are configured for lightweight precision.

What barrel are you running on that?

Although that lower is badass! If you guys want a "pretty gun" too, go to www.BrokenArmory.com for your lowers.

I've made a few changes since that picture. I ditched the knockoff (I think) mount in favor of an ADM RECON. Scope is the same model, just not painted on this one. Eventually the scope will get swapped out for either a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10X32 FFP or Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6X scope. I also ditched the side rail covers for some slimmer ladder rail covers and added a low profile QD socket underneath for one of my el cheapo DIY slings.

Here it is next to my 18" SPR for size comparison. The RECCE is definitely a more compact package, especially once the stock is collapsed. As configured, it also weighs almost 2 pounds less than the SPR.

Nice build! Good to see someone else rocking the UTG forend too. IMHO, these are the best deal going right now for quad rail handguards. I replaced a mid length Troy MRF with the UTG on my build. Better ergonomics, function, and lighter weight too.

16" BCM Stainless Mid-length Barrel
Vltor VIS-3 Rifle Length Monolithic Upper
Magpul UBR Stock
JD lower
Trijicon 1-4 Green post

Don't own it anymore because it was too heavy for 16" gun in my mind, but man could it shoot!

More of a sawed off MK 12 Mod 0 than a RECCE, but here is the latest build. This one is using a 14.5" Rainier Arms Select 300 BLK barrel with a pinned and welded Ops Inc 12th brake:

Swapped out the MIAD for a Sierra Precision grip. Aside from some small stuff like QD sling mounts up front, I think this one is pretty much done:

Bump.....

Finished this one a while back. 14.5" Ice Arms SS mid length with pinned/welded Ops 12th brake and 308 SPR collar. Built a brake shield for it so I can be considerate to neighbors at the range Eventually this one will get an Allen Engineering 5.56 suppressor once i get out of CA.

FMJBT, the progression of your rifle is pretty cool, assuming it's the same rifle. Rails to PRI to milled off rails... nicely done. And that brake shield is a great idea. Here's mine, on the left.
- BCM SS410 16" barrel
- Daniel Defense 12" lite rails
- Troy BUIS
- Vortex PST Viper 2.5-10x in a LaRure SPR mount
- Magpul ACS
- Magpul MOE+
- Geiselle SSA trigger
- Harris 6-9" swivel on LaRue mount
