Lightbulb Just finished my hunters safety class. Now what?

I know I need to go to Big 5, Dicks Sporting goods, Turners Outdoorsman, etc. to buy my hunting license now. But which one should I buy? I'd like to hunt waterfowl and upland birds. But thats not till September, so... maybe a rabbit or squirrel? Any ideas?

Right now you can junt jackrabbits i believe, I cannot remember if cottontail opens in July or not. You can head out to the desert and hunt coyote, be prepared to get up early as heck. You can buy your standard license, and you'll have to add the upland bird stamp, and waterfowl stamp. You can buy these at any time as they are good for a year. But the year goes july - july here in CA. Your fishing license goes jan - jan. This state is weird.

This reminds me, it's time to go renew my license and get after some bunnys!

Go here for the list of full or 10-hour style classes
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/classes.aspx
Or here for the 4-hour/home study/online study classes
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/classes-home-study.aspx

Fees are usually minimal as they are only to cover certain expenses, instructors are volunteers and do not profit from doing the classes

yes. IIRC (i'm not an expert) I think you only need extra stamps for upland bird, waterfowl, and larger game. you need tags for certain things as well (bobcat for example) But you are definitely good for bunnies, yotes, and rats with bushy tails.

Really? Kind of scary that you have to ask what type of hunting license you should get. Should you be out hunting if you don't know what you are actually hunting?

I took the 8 hour class at Raahague's in Corona, CA a couple of weeks ago. It was $35. You can also buy your license and various stamps/validations online through the DFG web site. License plus upland bird stamp was $55 and some change.

BTW, the hunter's safety course was very worthwhile. It was, by and large, common sense safety practices and some legal issues were covered. If you live within a couple hour drive of Corona, CA, I highly recommend this course. You can sign up through Turner's or call Raahauge's directly.
