Default AR-15 Sites on FF tube

Any opinions on putting sites on the free float tube of the AR? I've seen several set up like this, but no one ever speaks of the advantages or disadvantages.

Why not use a railed gas block and leave the tube alone?

I'm curious to hear responses on this too since my current project is my first free float.

What disadvantages? I cannot think of any. The advantage would be that you can use irons. Pretty important if you don't have any sort of optic. If you do have an optic, well lets just say batteries can die and glass can break.

Gas block are ugly IMO. Better to just hide it under a rail.

I think the disadvantage may be the exact opposite of the advantage of the free float tube. The front site is discontected from the barrel.

Flex the tube and it can missalign from the barrel. But does that really happen?

I doubt it will if done right. Assuming the tube is on correctly and the sight is on securely and zero'd there is no reason it shouldn't shoot good.

I plan on doing most of my builds like that; 16'' barrel, 9inch tube, and folding sights.

I think it does depending on what kind of shooting someone plans on doing. If you expect to be in an extended firefight with a horde of zombies you may see your groups start to open up a bit more than with a standard front sight on a hot barrel. Not sure by how much though.

Either system has advantages and disadvantages.

In general, barrel mounted sights will give the best accuracy, since the FF tube is designed to flex without transmitting the flex to the barrel if any stress is placed on it.

The main things that'll stress a FF tube enough to flex it are a bipod, a sling, and a VFG that's being gripped tightly under stress. The amount it flexes will depend on the FF tube design and how the stress is applied - both how muchs stress, and how far it is from the barrel nut.

For MOZ(ombie), it's not going to matter. For competition, the iron sights are pretty much always mounted on the barrel.

The advantage side is that the rails often extend beyond the gas block, giving a longer sight radius.

I like bipods,or at least sandbags and I won't be shooting competitions. Farily close range too maybe 100 yds at most. I want to be able to see the whites of their (zombies) eyes.

It sounds like I should be ok with putting them on the FF tube.
