Default Roll pin starter trick I saw in a Brownells video...

This saved me $15 on a roll-pin starter tool thanks to a Brownells install video. The instructor started his roll pins this way and it's always worked for me. I figured I'd share for some of you who are learning as well.

Roll punch + electrical tape

This is similar to what I did with a bolt catch pin except I taped a roll pin starter to a regular punch so I can make it longer lol

Good idea. Anything that helps, specially when installing pins in the trigger guard! I use a lithium based grease installing pins, much easier, sometimes you get one shot!

Good workaround if you don't have or have access to roll pin punches.

Thanks for the tip. A day late for me however. I just ordered a roll pin starter set from Midway this morning. I've been thrashing roll pins for years and finally decided to order a tool to help.

No worries. The electrical tape also protects the lower from getting scratched.

What I do is get an old punch that was already snapped. Grind a flat on the tip and drill an 1/8" hole about 1/8" to 3/16" deep and use that for roll pins, and the 3mm gas block/FSB pins. I start with that and finish with a flat faced punch.

I have a good set of Matco roll pin punches. I magnetize the punch but the pin still wants to cock. This is a simple way to get it started straight!!
Thanks, I will give it a try next time.

I use blue painters tape as its easier to unravel but still yields enough hold..

This trick helps me most on the bolt catch roll pin!!
