Default Radio Setup PRC 41 Found Locally

For anyone who's looking for a setup or parts I came across a PRC 41 with lots of accessories and military crate locally at Denio's flea market in Roseville. It looks like it had the pack frame as well as the command base fittings brackets. Handheld mic looks like a small phone, and chest mount for the mouthpiece as well as earphones. The guy wants $130 and probably negotiable.

I don't know, I didn't buy it. The kit looked pretty much complete from what I could see. And all of the connections on the exterior didn't look corroded.

UHF radio with a limited frequency band. Output around 3 watts. Difficult to power up without the proper batteries or power supply. Some collector interest and people who like limited operations.

My hand held ham radio puts out more power, has a larger frequency range and can be powered by the rechargable battery pack, 12 volt plug or AA battery pack.

But can you throw it out of an airplane and expect it to work when it gets to the ground?

(<schlock mercenary> Everything is air-droppable, at least once. </schlock mercenary>)

Obviously, you never served in the Marine Corps. We never expected the radios that we checked out of the comm shack to work.

I wouldn't expect anything to work if thrown from a perfectly good airplane once it hits the ground. Especially a 44lbs brick.

As a Radio Operator in the Marine Corps I carried a lot of different radios all over the world. I'll be honest here and say that since the digital revelution they have all gotten smaller, lighter, do more and have more features but my iPhone is better.

With all of the advances in civilian radio communications, material development and battery power over the last 20 years there is no reason that current military radios are as large and inefficient as they are.

As I said before my handheld HAM radio has better specs than across the board than this radio. In the size of a pack of smokes and less than 10% of the weight.

Too old. You can buy newer quality stuff on eBay. The components on the circuit board are properly leaking, and out of tune. Basically it might "work" but the quality of what you are transmitting will be crud.

True. I was Air National Guard, and our FM radios (3-box set, no longer recall what the designation was) were Korean War vintage (which, at the time, was only 20 years earlier); my job, sometimes, was making them work. The suggestion was that our copies had, indeed, been kicked out of airplanes, maybe even with parachutes; I don't know if that was true.

I'm pretty sure I'd choose 2000-ish tech over 1945-ish tech.
