Default Anyone know of any reputable OC machine shops to finish out 80 percents?

I am just looking to see if there are any local machine shops in Orange County that will allow you to machine the rest of your 80 percent.

I used arms specialty and tool. It was $65 and once the lower was in the machine or took about 20min. They were friendly very easy to work with.

I thought you had to do the machining yourself. Wouldn't that make the shop the manufacturer? I've never really considered an 80%, so I know nothing about the laws.

Yes and no.

If the shop guys do it yes. If they watch him and let him run the actual machine it's ok.

Not sure about the legality of assisting him.

Also tag for interest for possible future 80% project

It sounds like the shop is at great liability if they're doing the work.

Pretty much.

Reason you have to be on the machine while the works being done.

i mean the shop can do it. They would just need to stamp a serial ## and PPT it. But that kind kills the point of the 80%

They would need an FFL to do that. That is manufacturing.

Yea PPT it thought a FFL. Right? Or would they need to be an FFL them selves to do that? Should be the same as me makin one and selling it off later right? (After being serialed and PPTed through a FFL Rifle gear for example) no?

from what i can gather, you can't ever sell an 80% lower. but like i said earlier, i dont know much about it. It was made by you, an unlicensed manufacturer, so i think you have to keep it.

im seriously just curious for discussion's sake. I dont know much about it

Wait wait wait ok now IM confused. I was under the impression you can make a 80% for your self. Not for the intent to sell unless you need a FLL or other license (didn't really look I'm not lookin to sell lowers)

But if you had intent to make your self one it was possible to sell if need be later if marked with a serial # and had to go through a FFL via PPT which then makes it a normal lower/receiver?

Or are you stuck with it for good? Serial or not?

If they are manufacturing it with the intent to sell, they need an FFL07, and I believe pay the FET on it also.

You can sell it. IIRC has to be serialed/stamped, could be wrong on that though.

You must rent out the machine and complete the lower yourself. It involves securing the lower to a fixture and operating the machine. Since its preprogrammed you just just need to press a button. The shops cannot help in this process but can provide instruction.

Is TROB a troll or just oblivious. Read the op then look up other posts. Yes you can sell a lower you finished yourself you have to label it properly with all the details the law dictates.

Ok gotcha. Yea I didn't even think about them making it to sell to you.. Is making it to sell lol

Anyways back on topic any OC shops willing to do this? Also prices if possible too.

I have a buddy who will charge a small fee to let me use his shops but that's purely a homie hook up. But wouldn't mind a back up shop it that falls through or changes.

GABE @ AS&T (Arms Specialty & Tool) @ Orange [google for address/#]

~$70 for 1 lower mill time

Last I remember he offers rental equipment for both AR10s/15s and engraving/anodizing too

And if you don't want it in the future, but don't want to /can't sell it, you can always destroy the lower. 3 pieces

Only closing down shops that don't abide by the rules and laws. Gabe at AS&T is legit, legal and good to go. Finished a few projects in his shop and all came out perfecto. Highly recommended. Oh yeah and he's in OC by Angel stadium.

And you think spreading that FUD helps?

The ones that have been told to stop are the ones who also make and sell 80% lowers. Completing them at their facility makes them a manufacturer requiring a FFL07. And since the shops weren't licensed... not allowed; finish it elsewhere or at home with a jig.

+1 on fmunk's comments. Shops were being closed down because they were both selling the 80s and offering machine time.

Gabe @ AS&T is a master! Nothing is left undone, and his knowledge of machining and his CNC machine is remarkable. I was there today, and even though my lower was missing a bit of machining from the vendor, he was patient and explained what was wrong and why it wouldn't fit the jig in his fearsome CNC machine. I watched him walk others through the process and he never (repeat NEVER) did the work for them. He taught them how to set it up, and never pushed the START button himself. AS&T is completely above board and I will take every lower I make to them. <nuff said!>

Isn't this wrong also? I thought they were telling people who were manufacturing (making the 80%s, not selling the 80%s) and offering help to finish were in the wrong? But people who just sold and not make were allowed to offer tool rentals to finish?

Correct me if I'm wrong?

Does anybody know if AS&T machines in the "SAFE" and "FIRE" on the LR? I just noted that my 80% doesn't have these.

Every 80% lower I have ever seen lacks selector markings. People usually have them engraved on (I did). From someone else's post, it seems AS&T also offers engraving services.

Had it machined this morning with Gabe and it went flawlessly. I can't say enough about AS&T and their operation. I'd post pix but you all probably have seen enough of them already. No need for another before/after photo with shiny aluminum. Now, to make up my mind on a decent upper........

Any pictures of the process? If you got some post them up for archival sake. I'm sure people searching the topic might like to see what they can expect.

Go with a BCM barreled upper group, from there you can do whatever you want. Different hand guards, etc. I built a mock dissipator from a mid-length BCM. Just have to find time to get the 80% milled.

And yes, as you found out, they can do engraving (as well as anodizing and cerakoting):
