Default reapplying to agencies after failing 5 years ago

I would like to become a police officer. I was going through the process back in 2006 and 2007. I lost parents about 6 months apart from each other. I was the one that found my fathers body. I was 22. I went through a lot of crap, and didn't know how to handle it. I failed the background to NCPD. Did not even make it to background with SDPD or Sheriffs. Too many transgressions too recent to my application process. I admitted to cheating on a test, I've smoked Marijuana on two occasions, had traffic tickets in the past, and my credit wasn't that great. All reasons for failing. They said wait 5 years

My biggest concern is that I convinced myself to go see a shrink, after my parents passed and the police thing fell through. I magnified the situation. I wanted meds. I wanted the pain to go away, not thinking long term. I was prescribed a few different medications. Zoloft being one of them, which sure made the pain go away along with every other emotion humanly possible. I took myself off all meds, told the Shrink I was felling better. He said 'great, the meds worked, come back if you're not feeling well anymore'. Once off the meds, I did feel better.

Present day, I am thinking about giving this thing a run again. I work for the Sheriffs Dept in a non sworn position.

I don't want to waste my time, nor any agencies time, money, resources, be it Sheriffs, SDPD...

Was my seeing a shrink an auto DQ? I was prescribed a medication used to treat Bipolar disorder. My shrink never said I was Bipolar, but I showed signs. His explanation of the prescription was it would make my migraines stop, as well as mellow me out.

Am I crazy for thinking I have a shot?

You have a shot. Talk to a Bg investigator and tell them your history and ask if there would be any problems. I work for a major dept and have been successful. I have also smoked weed, cheated on a test, gotten a traffic ticket, been arrested as a teenager and get 30% for ptsd from Iraq and see a shrink couple times a month but those are a few of the negative things that outweigh the positive things about me. The dept looks at you as a whole to see if your worth it and a liability. make your positives outweigh your negatives. Make your credit good, get a degree or work towards it, join the army reserves and volunteer some places too

Give it some time. Some of the leos here active or retired, may be enjoying some time off with their families. Rest assured, they are forthcoming with their answers to questions asked of them.

I will refrain from doing so as I've been retired 10yrs. and have been away too long from the hiring process to be able to answer your question. That said, personally I believe your doc's statement that you showed signs of bipolar disorder, will be a concern as regards possible future liability.

A big part of being an LEO is being able to handle stress, you need to be able to show it as a positive about how you were able to grow and how you have learned to deal with stress etc

Heck I would not worry about the Zoloft there are quite a few officers who are prescribed it and are working....

I wish I was off....

To the OP, I wouldn't call it a waste of your time but your medical history obviously isn't going to help you at all. You are going to have to show how/why you are in a different and better position mentally now than you were several years back. Another tough part is the sheer number of applicants out there right now for most decent agencies. In my opinion, if its something you truly want you should give it a try. It is better to try and be told "no" than to live the rest of your life wondering "what if.."
