Default Consequence of powerful rare earth magnets in contact with electronics?

There is a mod a lot of sport bike owners are doing so they can use tank bags that are magnetic. As most fuel tank covers are plastic, magnetic tank bags no longer work so a lot of guys are pulling off the covers, gluing rare earth magnets on the inside of the cover where they would make contact with the magnets on the bag.
My question, would these rare earth magnets screw up a cell phone or ipod?
Thanks.

The magnets come with different strengths.

Yes- they can destroy electronics and watches if you get a strong enough magnet.

You can always use adhesive backed Velcro and then leave the bag on your bike.

Oh my God! That's so original. I've never seen that before! How did you do that!?!?!?

Oh, and those first few links, it goes 50/50 with half saying magnets will damage electronics and half stating they wont. Which is it then?

Wait, just realized then, wouldn't it erase credit cards, CACs, licenses?
How close do those items need to be in over to damage them? would if say wallet in back pocket and I lean against the bike cause issues or would the separation of denim and leather be enough?

Yeah... not happening. Definitely not going to put velcro on my bike

I'm actually surprised no one has made an ICP or Mormon reference yet

- Generally speaking, magnets will not hurt modern electronic devices.
- Wallet/denim is not enough to prevent CCs and IDs with magnetic strip from being damaged.

I have also known people to put a piece of steel on the inside of the plastics where the tankbag would "land" if the tankbag magnet is strong enough.

Ya know if you pull apart a hard drive, there's a rare earth magnet right in it.
I don't think you'll have a problem. But your mileage may vary.
