Shooting is not a pure athletic pursuit. It is a skill. In that regard, it is more like golf than any other sport I can think of. Core strength would be a priority. Of course, if you trek through the Sierras at altitude with a slung rifle, you'd require a cardio component as well.

If practical shooting, either pistol or multigun your thing.

I do agree with core workout, fast twitch muscle workout or plyometrics. Upper body and grip workout to control the pistol/rifle/shotgun.

Check this out.

Current style of the sport is very athletic and varies where you shoot matches.

May 5th is our next match if you are free and in So Cal www.prg-ipsc.com

Have you seen the body types of the top multi gun shooters?

Not sure fitness is required.

For grip and hand strength, to control recoil in a pistol, Bob Vogel uses Captains of Crush Grippers.

Stage design definitely plays a factor...

But as Moto said, if you ever see Taran in person, you'll see how quick he is

The Taranasuarus, he is an Alien Robot. And he uses a Jedi mind trick to slow the clock down and curve the bullets

I was looking in general becuase i couldnt find much related to IDPA.......

I do aggree with this ....Matches can take all day and although not much physical demand.... it can drain the mind.....being fit in body is just another way of prepairing yourself IMHO

And its good for bow season as well

IDPA has far less movement than USPSA, but more than the Steel Challenge. 3 gun is where athletic ability really comes in, like the IronMan or the International Tactical Rifle Championship.

Are they skill drills or body workouts?

working out definetly helps my action shooting. as has been said, number one Core, and plyometrics. arms, shoulders, lots of pushups. and some cardio. I want to start working on some start stop drills to improve reaction time from box to box.

I have been doing P90x, Insanity and a couple others alogn with wieghts and some yoga so as to not pull muscles.

lost 30 pounds in the two years since.

That's why Daniel slew the Taranasuarus... They are separated by divisions now. But the Taran is still among the God Like shooters, including Leatham and Miculek.

The funny thing is a strong yoga practice will cover the elements other people have listed: core (for balance), plus strength training for the rest of the body, and cardio. It is not great for grip and you would want to add pull ups, but otherwise it's a good way to build strength and flexibility.

Crossfit workouts are a good all-around option, but look for a crossfit gym that fits your fitness goals. Some are strength oriented, some cardio or endurance oriented.

In all seriousness, can you pm me rmatt? I am interested. Also, I'll vouch for yoga being a good workout.

Made me chuckle. Truth!

BTW, seen Horner shoot several times live. In a big, open field course where he can use his physicality and shoot on the move, you're not going to beat that dude. He's almost 20 years junior than the top guys. Big, physioogical difference.

Absolutely... He's one of the best without a doubt... But think of how much better Babe Ruth would have been if he lived life a bit healthier... Bonds wouldn't of had a chance to break his record, and it would have been Hank Who???

That might be the case for Taran.
